For all intents and purposes the Iowa Hawkeyes should start off the 2019 college football campaign with a win. Kirk Ferentz’ team is favored by over 3 TD as they begin the season by hosting Miami of Ohio.
Miami (Ohio) Redhawks
The Redhawks finished 2018 strong, winning 5 of their last 7 games. It was an 0-3 start to the year that included losses vs. Marshall, Cincinnati, and Minnesota that put Miami in an insurmountable hole.

Things don’t get any easier in 2019, traveling to Kinnick Stadium to take on Iowa in a rowdy home opener. Miami Ohio doesn’t have anybody that really sticks out at you on their roster – in fact that lack of depth is what’s instantly noticeable.
To be honest, the Redhawks could have a hard time even scoring in this one. This is due mostly to the depth chart at QB being Jackson Williamson (RS sophomore), AJ Meyer (RS freshman), and Brett Gabbert (freshman).
Miami University simply doesn’t have enough depth at other positions on offense to make up for their inexperience at signal caller. Miami averaged nearly 160 rushing yards per game last year, but they lost top two rushers Alonzo Smith and Kenny Young.
Obviously the Redhawks best chance to get a win (or cover) in this game is to hold Iowa to as few points as possible. Miami of Ohio returns 6 starters on defense, but has very little experience in the front 7. The big boys upfront for Iowa should be able to exploit this weakness.
Iowa Hawkeyes
One of the best reasons to be confident in an Iowa cover on Saturday is because they do have experience under center. QB Nate Stanley is back for his 3rd year at the helm for the Hawkeyes, having thrown 26 TDs in each of the last two seasons.

Iowa also has a lot of depth returning in the backfield as the top three RB’s are all back for 2019. The gorup of Mekhi Sargent, Toren Young, and Ivory Kelly-Martin combined for 1723 rushing yards and 14 TD. That should offset the loss of Iowa’s top three pass receivers from a year ago – including two NFL 1st round pick TEs.
The Iowa offensive line is once again a strength and are being touted as one of the nation’s best by many experts. This means the Hawkeyes should be able to run at will vs. a very inexperienced Miami front line.
Another reason Miami Ohio might struggle to crack double digits in this one is because the Hawkeyes defense ranked 7th in the country in total yards and 11th in scoring a year ago.
Iowa did lose all four DL starters from a year ago, but they played in an 8-man rotation and have a lot of players with on-field experience.
Iowa has also shown the proficiency in taking care of business in their early season non-conference games. In 2018 the Hawkeyes started 3-0 with a 33-7 win over Northern Illinois, a 13-3 victory over rival Iowa State, and a 38-14 drubbing of Northern Iowa.

Free Week 1 NCAA Football Pick
If Miami of Ohio had some depth returning they might have an ATS shot in this one but it’s simply a bad matchup with the Redhawks youth vs. Iowa’s experience.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Iowa -21.5
Hopefully Iowa doesn’t ease up in this one and settle for something like a 33-17 season opening win. A shutout to start the season would be huge for the Hawks’ especially with a Big Ten game already on tap for week two at home vs. Rutgers.
