The Marshall Thundering Herd are trying to avoid a 3 – 3 start to the season, while also trying to move on from a 10-point loss at home to Middle Tennessee State. The Herd started 2017 with 6 wins from their first 7 games before ending the year 1 – 4 before bowl season.

The Old Dominion Monarchs are already in the danger zone in regards to making a bowl game this year. Should the Monarchs start the season 1 – 6, they would have to win out to become eligible.
What’s even more strange about the Monarch’s 1 – 5 start, is the fact that their win is over Virginia Tech as +28 point underdogs.
Marshall Thundering Herd
Sophomore QB Isaiah Green was just starting to get his feet under him in his first year as a starter for the Herd. A knee injury has him questionable to go this weekend against Old Dominion.
Junior transfer Alex Thomson got his first Division 1 start in Green’s absence last weekend. The Herd ended up losing 34 – 24 last Friday to Middle Tennessee State, despite being favored at -4 entering the contest. Thomson’s first start resulted in the loss, and he only completed 50% of his attempts, in addition to an untimely interception.
The man to watch in green and white is #3, Tyler King. King is one of those ‘Mr. Everything’ type of guys. He will run the ball, catch the ball out of the backfield, and you’ll find him returning punts and kickoffs as well. King was left off the special teams unit this past weekend, however, as back-up receivers Marcel Williams and Willie Johnson returned all the kicks.
Some of the stats in the Middle Tennessee vs. Marshall game certainly leave people wondering how Marshall lost. The Herd led in time of possession, were 8 – 17 on third down and 4 – 4 on fourth down. The Blue Raiders were held to 4 of 12 on third down conversion attempts, and only rushed for 103 yards on 35 carries overall.

Old Dominion Monarchs
Would you like the good news, or the bad news? Well, let’s highlight the good news first, because no one wants bad news to start their day.
Old Dominion put up over 500 yards last weekend against Florida Atlantic, and quarterback Blake LaRussa had himself quite a day. La Russa went 39 – 51, put up 390 passing yards and threw for two scores. It gets better.
Old Dominon held the ball for nearly 39 minutes and only committed three penalties for 25 yards.
The bad news.. Florida Atlantic won 52 – 33, only held the ball for 21 minutes and committed 8 penalties for 84 yards. FAU was 0 for 4 on fourth down though baby, so we found a light in the crack!
More bad news comes in the form of the defensive issues for the Monarchs. Out of 130 FBS Division 1 teams, the Monarchs rank 127th in yards allowed (525), and 121st in passing yards allowed per game at 298.2.
Monarch QB Steven Williams was certainly more of a two-way threat QB then LaRussa is, although Williams has decided to redshirt this year, and will not be expected back on the field this season.

Once again we see Marshall favored by -4, and we watched how that worked out last Friday against Middle Tennessee State. The Blue Raiders won outright, and now The Herd need to use that extra day off in their favor.
Old Dominion gave up three 4th quarter touchdowns last weekend to FAU, leaving us all questioning their conditioning.
