The Georgia Southern defense continues to shine, after another stellar performance in their 34 – 14 win over Appalachian State last weekend. The Eagles knocked Mountaineer starting QB Zac Thomas out of the game on their first drive, and soared to a 34 – 14 win as 11-point underdogs at home.
Sophomore QB Shai Wertz ran the triple option to perfection against Appalachian State last Thursday night. Wertz only completed a single pass, while he and RB Wesley Fields plowed over the competition on the ground. In case you have missed it, Wertz and Fields have been running the ball at a maddening pace in 2018. combining for 132 carries through 8 games.
Wertz has not thrown an interception all season long, and has 5 TF with his arm, and 10 more with his feet this season. His 47-yard scamper on an option keep got the second half started for the Eagles, and they never really looked back from there.

As the Eagles sit perched in a tie for first place in the East Division, the Warhawks find themselves in a similar situation. At 2 – 2 and 4 – 4 overall, the Warhawks are tied with the Ragin’ Cajuns at the top of the West Division standings entering this weekend.
The Warhawks carry their modest two-game win streak into the weekend, and hope to avoid a similar finish to the 2017 season. Last year, LA-Monroe reached a 4 – 5 record before losing their last three games failing to reach a bowl bid for the fifth straight year. The Warhawks must find two wins from their last four contests to hope for a bowl bid in 2018, and they come off a bye week to prepare for the Eagles.
Georgia Southern Eagles
The Georgia Southern Eagles finished 2017 with a 2 – 10 record, but Head Coach Chad Lunsford brought light to a program that seemed to have faded away. After two losing seasons, which is something that had never happened in the history of the program, Lunsford turned his interim status to the man in charge full-time. His first full season on the sidelines is going pretty well, wouldn’t you say?
A 7 – 1 start to the season has already ensured that the Eagles will be taking part in bowl season. The Eagles will be making their first bowl appearance since the 2015 GoDaddy Bowl, in which the Eagles came away with a 58 – 27 win over Bowling Green.
Head Coach Chad Lunsford took over an 0 – 6 program to finish out last year, and went 2 – 4 before being handed the job as top banana in Statesboro, GA. This is his first season as a head coach in college football, he has been as assistant with the program since 2013. A good ole Georgia boy through and through, he has propelled the Eagles to the best record in the Conference at 7 – 1.
Lunsford gained notoriety as the Auburn Scouting Director from 2009 – 2012, before returning to the Eagles as the WR assistant in 2013, and has worked his way up the ladder to the head honcho. Lunsford started coaching right out of Georgia College where he graduated in 2000. He was the Appalachian State TEs coach for two seasons in 2001 and 2002 as his first gig out of college.
Currently tied with Troy at 4 – 0 atop the East Division in the Sun Belt Conference, the Eagles and Troy will be facing of next weekend in a possible fight for sole possession of the division lead.
Georgia Southern’s defense has led the charge for the Eagles in 2018, only allowing a league-low 61 points through the teams first four conference games. Riding a 5-game win streak into this weekend, the Eagles are riding high after their upset win over Appalachian State last weekend.

The Eagles were +11 point underdogs at home to Appalachian State, and after taking out Mountaineer QB Zac Thomas, the Eagles dominated the rest of the night. Last Thursday the Eagles came away with 34 – 14 win over strongly favored Appalachian State, and are now 5 – 0 at home this season as well.
Starting QB Shai Wertz has been worth the price of admission for the Eagles this season. Team Captain Wesley Fields is a load coming out of the back field for the Eagles, as the running back scored the final Eagles touchdown to take a 34 – 7 lead with 3:28 remaining to play.
The Eagles defense had four interceptions and lead the nation in +/- Ratio at +19. That’s right people, #1 in all of the land in turnover margin, causing 5 overall last weekend.
Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks
After getting absolutely manhandled by Ole Miss, 70 – 21 in week 7, the Warhawks ended their four-game losing streak with wins over Coastal Carolina and Texas State going into their bye-week last weekend.
Junior QB Caleb Evans has gone three straight games without an interception, including the Ole Miss thrashing on October 6. Evans is in his second full season running the Warhawk offense, but the numbers don’t exactly show that he is progressing from a season ago. Evans only threw 6 interceptions last season and already has 6 with four games remaining to play. His completion percentage is down from a year ago, as is his QB rating and his yards per attempt are both down from his 2017 output.
Senior Syracuse native Derrick Gore leads the team with 431 rushing yards and 5 TDs on the ground. His two scores against Coastal Carolina were instrumental in their 45 – 20 win over the Chanticleers in week 7, although he disappeared last weekend completely. Gore has a long of 6-yards on 11 carries last weekend against a weak Texas State run defense. Gore picked up 147 rush yards against Coastal Carolina, and only 27 yards against North Texas, as the Warhawks escaped with a 20 – 14 win.
Head Coach Matt Viator is 12 – 20 in his third year at LA-Monroe, but he and defensive coordinator Mike Collins still have poor stats in 2018 again. LA-Monroe ranked near the bottom of nearly every major defensive category in 2017, and rank 120th in total defensive yards allowed, at 483.2 per contest.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The offense has not been able to keep with the defensive inefficiencies throughout the season. The Warhawks are scoring 24 points per game and are allowing 35.5 per game, ranking 121st of 130 FBS programs in stopping the opposing passing attack.
Despite the defensive numbers for the Warhawks again this season, their totals have gone to the under in 6 of 8 games.
Georgia Southern has played to the under in 5 of their 8 games this season, although their offense has run the ball extremely well this season. The Eagles rank 4th in the nation in rushing yards per game, putting up 276.8, and rank dead-last of 130 ranked teams in passing offense.
