This season opener will feature an SEC matchup between the Georgia Bulldogs and the Vanderbilt Commodores.
Last season the Bulldogs crushed Vandy 41-13. The previous year when they played in Nashville, Georgia won 45-14.
Georgia Bulldogs
This is a year for the Dawgs that will be championship or bust. The past two seasons have been spoiled by Alabama essentially and Georgia will be looking to make a statement in game one. Yes, this game is against Vandy, but they need to prove they are not going away anytime soon.
[dfads params=’groups=220&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The Dawgs will return a ton of talent as expected. Jake Fromm for one is probably one of the most important keys to the success of Georgia. Fromm threw for 2,749 last year with 30 touchdowns and 6 interceptions. Georgia also has D’Andre Swift, James Cook returning and Zamir White will finally get to see some action after missing last year with an injury. The Bulldogs are loaded on both sides of the ball and they will be looking to crush Vandy again.
The offense for Georgia was 14th in the country an averaged 37.9 points per game last season. They only really struggled against LSU and Texas, and Vandy is far worse than both those teams, so I look for Georgia to put up at least 40 points.
The Georgia defense was 16th in the country last season, allowing 18.5 points per game. They are likely only going to be better with their returning talent and new faces on the defensive side of the ball. Georgia held Vandy to 13 points last year, and I believe it will be a similar number in this game to start the season.
Vanderbilt Commodores
Vandy finished 2018 with a record of 6-7 after losing to Baylor in their bowl game. They will look to improve on last year and try to actually have a winning record to build off of. Starting the season against Georgia does not bode well for them as they tend to play poor against the Dawgs.

Vandy lost their quarterback, Kyle Shurmur, to the NFL Draft, which is a huge blow entering the year. It is still a little unclear who will be named as the starting quarterback, but they will almost definitely not be better than Shurmur. The quarterback play will have to be nearly perfect if the Commodores even want to stand a chance.
The Vandy offense was tied for 70th in scoring offense, averaging 28.5 points per game. As I mentioned before, they will be playing a much less experienced quarterback and I do not see them having much success in this game. One notable offensive starter who is returning is Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Vaughn rushed for 1,244 yards last season and will need to have a monster game against Georgia to take the pressure off of whoever ends up starting at quarterback.
Vanderbilt actually finished in the top 50 in defense in terms of points allowed per game. The number they allowed was 25.1. The main concern for Vandy will be their run defense. They allowed 187.3 rushing yards per game last season, while the Dawgs averaged 238.8 rushing yards per game.
