A classic in-state battle during Rivalry Week has more relevancy than it’s had for some time, thanks to the resurgence of the Gators under new head coach Jim McElwain.
It’s funny to say, because not too many years ago, the shoe was on the other foot. Florida State was a sagging program as it made the transition from legend (but dinosaur) Bobby Bowden to current coach Jimbo Fisher.
Florida, meanwhile, was at the top of its game thanks to Tim Tebow and head man Urban Meyer, now the big kid on the block for Ohio State.
Florida has been in a dry spell lately though, while FSU has been enjoying a national championship flavor.
The Gators have a chance to make a bold statement at home this weekend, not only to recruits but in the minds of pollsters. It won’t be an easy task because the recent seasons of success have the ’Noles stacked with talent.
Yet, Coach McElwain has exceeded expectations thus far, a win over the rival from the Panhandle would be the exclamation point on that trend.

True, the Seminoles don’t have “Famous” Jameis Winston anymore – he was busy dropping five TDs on the Philadelphia Eagles last Sunday – but they inherit another veteran QB in former Notre Dame signal-caller Everett Golson.
He’s done a decent job under center for FSU, but the straw that stirs the drink in Tallahassee is dynamic RB Dalvin Cook.
Florida State
Cook has racked up an eye-popping 1,475 yards and 16 TDs, and that’s with missing the Syracuse game earlier in the season due to injury. The sophomore from Miami is the sparkplug for FSU’s entire attack.
The Seminoles, for the most part, have been as good as advertised.
They laid an egg in the first half of the year against an inferior opponent (last-place Georgia Tech) and their only other blemish came against Heisman candidate Deshaun Watson and Clemson.
Clemson is among the best teams in the nation in 2015, so falling short there is understandable.
For the sake of Florida State’s image, it needs to take care of business against the Gators this weekend, however.
When the Seminoles aren’t handing off to Cook, WR Travis Rudolph soaks in most of Golson’s passes. Florida State has its characteristic stout defense, as the team hovers near the Top 10 in the country in points yielded per game.
The electric Cook and Golson’s veteran guile are also responsible for the ‘Noles having a high-scoring offensive attack.

Florida
People predicted that UF was on the right track maybe a year or so ago, but the Gators have progressed faster than experts imagined.
The McElwain hire was perceived sceptically at first, but he’s proven a good fit for the job as the historically strong program from Gainesville is back in double-digit win territory.
It’s interesting to see RB Kelvin Taylor carrying the mail for Florida on the ground, as he is the son of former Florida star (and NFL standout for the nearby Jacksonville Jaguars) Fred Taylor.
Florida has impressively registered a 7-1 record against SEC foes this year, losing only to the dominant Leonard Fournette and LSU. Even in a weaker SEC East division, that’s a desirable metric.
Taylor has been good and WR Antonio Callaway has been a big-play man on the outside, but the key to the renaissance is the defense that flies around the field at turbo speed.
Florida’s stable of athletes it recruits has congealed defensively and it makes for an aggressive, effective unit. Cornerback Vernon Hargreaves III is among the best in the nation and will be a high pick in the upcoming NFL Draft.
It is fair to say that everything has gone Florida’s way thus far.

4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Florida State ATS
Florida’s resurgence has been a refreshing narrative in the SEC for any casual college football fan and for the hordes of loyalists in northern Florida.
However, I still don’t think they have the horses to keep up the Seminoles.
Florida State was guilty of growing complacent in its loss to the Yellow Jackets earlier in the year, but FSU has gotten its house in order since then.
I don’t anticipate it to be a barnburner, but it should still be an exciting one under the lights at The Swamp. I don’t fear underclassman Florida QB Treon Harris enough to think that Florida is going to win this game.
