It look as if Lane Kiffin’s squad has figured things out after their slow start and now they’ll take on the reigning Conference USA champ in a game with major conference championship implications.
[dfads params=’groups=220&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
The Hilltoppers have been nowhere near as explosive as last season but are still off to a 5-2 start including a 3-1 conference record. Now, they’re set to be a full touchdown underdog at home – something that has not happened in quite a bit for Western Kentucky.
Florida Atlantic Owls
Kiffin and the Owls started off with 3 losses in their first 4 games. Albeit, two of those were to Wisconsin and Navy – two of the more challenging and well-disciplined matchups in the country.
But the Owls seem to have found their rhythm. They scored on 11 straight drives last week against North Texas on their way to a 69-31 victory.

They are the nation’s 14th ranked rushing offense – averaging 260 rushing yards per game including 384 per game in their last three.
Devin Singletary has led the way with 14 rushing touchdowns on 123 carries – an unbelievable 8.8 carries per touchdown rate.
Five other players have scored rushing touchdowns bringing the team rushing touchdown count to 28.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Owls have been decent but have struggled against the run a bit – allowing 5.3 yards per carry which ranks 111th in the nation.
They are top 35 team in the nation in terms of scoring margin per game and that is even with 3 losses on their record. They seem to be firing on all cylinders at this point – outscoring their opponents by a total of 86 points in the last 3 games.
Western Kentucky Hilltoppers
After being one of the nation’s best and most explosive offenses, the Hilltoppers have taken quite the step back with the departure of a bunch of major weapons.
[dfads params=’groups=219&limit=1&return_javascript=1′]
They are averaging just 26.9 points per game on the season which is less than half of what they averaged last season when they were nation’s top scoring offense.
Quarterback Mike White is still here from that team but a lot of his weapons are gone. They are nation’s worst rushing offense in terms of yards per carry – averaging just 2.6. White is missing some of his offensive line from last year too and its showing as he is getting sacked more than twice the amount per game than he did last season.
While the Hilltoppers are 5-2 and 3-1 in the conference, their conference wins are over UTEP, Charlotte, and Old Dominion who have combined to win just 3 games total on the season.
Their other wins are over Eastern Kentucky – an FCS school – and Ball State who has managed just two wins this season.
So don’t be fooled by the Hilltoppers 5-2 record. This is hardly a .500 caliber football team and they have been overrated all season long going 1-6 ATS. The departure of several important players to the NFL as well as their coach Jeff Brohm to Purdue has left this program merely remnants of what it was last year.
NCAA Football Handicapping Trends

Free Week 9 NCAA Football Pick
Kiffin seems to have this team rolling and you know he will be trying to roll over opponents in order to get himself more national attention. It would be silly to think Kiffin is at FAU for the long haul but his offensive knowledge is on display thus far and you can bet he will continue to try to flaunt it.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: FAU -7.0
I think Western Kentucky’s defense is pretty solid but their offense has nowhere near the firepower necessary to hang with the Owls. The Hilltoppers may get some stops early on but the FAU offense will eventually roll.
