The 2 – 2 FAU Owls came into the 2018 campaign with high expectations after reeling off 10-straight wins to finish last season. Despite some losses at key positions, the line setters put FAU as one of the favorites to take the Conference-USA title in 2018.
Well, someone forgot to tell FAU’s defensive coordinator, Tony Pecoraro, that his defense needs to hold up their end of the bargain. There are 130 teams in FBS Division 1 and FAU is ranked 127th in points allowed (43.5).

It’s not all that shocking that the Blue Raiders are 1 – 2 on the young season. Having to start the season with a road game in Vanderbilt only to follow that up with a trip to Georgia last weekend, sure doesn’t make any coach’s life easy.
It might be time to jump on this defensive unit as well, because the Blue Raiders have given up an average of 40 points per contest through their first three games.
Florida Atlantic Owls
Lane Kiffin’s Owls had quite a daunting task last weekend against Central Florida. The Owls were 14-point dogs at Central Florida and played a stellar first half going to the locker room, down only 4, 21 – 17. From there, the wheels fell off, and Kiffin’s defense simply couldn’t stop #10, Mr. Milton. Milton had three passing and three rushing TDs against the Owls in week 4, en route to the UCF win, 56 – 36.
Luckily for Kiffin, Middle Tennessee’s Brent Stockstill is not the dual threat QB that Milton was. Is this Stockstill’s 14th year with the Blue Raiders? He has actually been with this team since 2013, and is now 24 years old in his senior season. Must be interesting to be the coach’s son, I guess.
Anyway, the Owls need to find some of that 2017 magic and soon, because there is nothing easy about their remaining schedule either.
Putting the ball in Devin Singletary’s hands is never a bad idea. He only put up 1918 rushing yards last year on 301 carries, and added 32 scores on the ground as well. Hmm hmm, only! LOL The junior out of Deerfield Beach, FL is already over 3,000 rushing yards in just over two seasons.

Middle Tennessee Blue Raiders
The Blue Raiders will rely heavily on the experience of QB Brent Stockstill to get past the Owls. After having his season cut short due to an injury last season, Stockstill wants to make sure his senior season is one to remember.
The running game is a major issue in support of Stockstill, as evident from their only win over UT Martin this season. Knoxville native Chaton Mobley appears to be the guy expected to carry the ball this year, but 66 yards on 14 carries was all he could muster up in the Blue Raider win against the Skyhawks in week 2.
Middle Tennessee also has the luxury of a bye coming into this weekend’s contest at home. Having two weeks to prepare for the Owls certainly won’t hurt matters, but there is still much to improve on both sides of the ball.
The Blue Raiders are ranked 124th out of 130 FBS teams in defensive points allowed (40.3 PPG).

The Owls are coming off a brutal second half beat-down at the hands of Central Florida, and Middle Tennessee has had two weeks to prepare for FAU arrival to Floyd Stadium on Saturday.
Of course, we have to account for the opponents the Blue Raiders have faced, having played 2 SEC squads in their three outings thus far.
One position the Owls are not worried about is running back, because Devin Singletary is arguably the best player that will take the field tonight.
With FAU bouncing back from a terrible second half last weekend, I expect Kiffin to have his team ready for a big road trip.

Florida Atlantic covers this line, and goes into Floyd Stadium to find a win on the road. The line is reasonable, and the FAU running game should control most of the game.
