The BYU Cougars slipped to 4 – 4 on the season after their 7 – 6 home loss to N. Illinois last weekend. The Cougars have lost their of their last four games after starting the year 3 – 1, as the offense has come to a screeching halt of late.
The Cougars made the transition to quarterback Zach Wilson during the Utah State game on October 5. Tanner Mangum has not seen the field since, although the offense has certainly not benefitted much from the change.
Wilson certainly has some skills and has no problem tucking the ball in to gain some yards in the ground game. Mangum simply did not have the ability to be mobile, and now Wilson has the job to lose.

Senior QB Brett Rypien came back for his final season to hopefully lead the Broncos to big things in 2018. At 6 – 2, the Broncos are glad he made that decision, and it’s games like last weekend that remind us how good he is.
Rypien came up 1 yard shy of 400 passing yards last weekend in the Broncos 48 – 38 win over Air Force. The Broncos had two different receivers topple the 100-yard plateau, as WR John Hightower had himself a day.
Hightower caught 8 balls for 183 yards and three scores in the win, while Sean Modster brought in 6 balls for 101 yards on the night.
BYU Cougars
Freshmen QB Zach Wilson put up 3 TD passes in the Broncos win over Hawaii in his first collegiate start on October 13. Head Coach Salani Sitake thought the transition would continue to prosper, but last weekend the offense was ineffective, and the Cougars only managed to kick 2 field goals in a 7 – 6 home loss.
Wilson will now have to learn how to play in a hostile environment, on blue turf, late at night, in 40 degree temperatures.

Boise State has never lost to BYU at home, as the Cougars have made 4 trips to Idaho and lost each time.
The Cougars offense ranks 121st in the nation in total yards per game, and rank in the bottom 30 of nearly every major offensive category. Wilson completed passes to 10 different receivers last weekend in the 7 – 6 loss to Northern Illinois. Obviously no one got into the end zone, despite the field goal to take a 3 – 0 lead on their opening possession of the game.
BYU’s defense continued to shine, as they only allowed 11 first downs, and held the Huskies to 204 total yards. The Cougars rank 26th in the nation in total yards allowed, although it is still at 355 yards per contest.
Boise State Broncos
The Broncos offense continued its torrid pace in 2018, as Brett Rypien leads the 8th ranked passing attack to week 10 of the season. With four games remaining in the regular season, the Broncos are hoping to be playing in the Mountain West Conference title game, already having their bowl eligibility claimed as well.
Head Coach Bryan Harsin is now 48 – 14 mid-way through his fifth campaign with the Boise State Broncos. As I covered the Boise State / Air Force game here at Cappers Picks, I mentioned that Air Force Head Coach Troy Calhoun became only the second man to win 50 MWC games in his career. Harsin is now two wins away from becoming the third man to stake that claim in his only five seasons!
Remarkable actually, and the Broncos are nearly two-touchdown favorites on the blue turf this weekend against visiting BYU.
It really hasn’t just been the Brett Rypien show this season either, because the Broncos have talent all over the field.

The goods don’t stop with the offense, because their defense continues to make big stops when the team needs it the most. Linebacker Riley Whimpey was in the Air Force back field all night long, involved with 13 tackles to go along with his sack of Isaiah Sanders.
While BYU is struggling adjusting to a new quarterback, they know this will be Wilson’s first ever road start of his young career. make no mistake that the crowd will know it, the announcers will talk about it, and it might be a long night in Idaho for the Cougars this weekend.
The BYU defense should be able to keep them in the game early, but they will not be able to slow down the Broncos for 60 minutes. It could get a little ugly on the blue turf, should the Cougars fall behind early.

The Cougars are not well-suited for any type of comeback, and Boise State will certainly come out strong to remind young Wilson that Boise State is no picnic. The Broncos bust out for 38, and easily handle BYU’s struggling offense, while Rypien continues to add stats to his senior campaign.
4* Free NCAA Betting Pick: Boise State is favored at -13, with a 54.5 showing on the total. Free ATS or O/U final score pick provided below!
The play to make is on the Broncos to continue their battle with Utah State for top spot in the Mountain Division. Those two will meet on the final weekend of the regular season here in Boise, and that could decide who advances to the conference title game. Before we get there, Boise State wins this game 38 – 17, which makes the total a tricky play listed at 54.5. Take Boise to cover the line, and think about a halftime prop bet on the Broncos as well.
