The Akron Zips and South Carolina Gamecocks meet on Saturday to make up their PPD games from early in the season. Originally not set to square off at all, this meeting was arranged on November 1 as both teams needed to find a 12th game to play.
The Zips had their opening weekend game postponed against Nebraska due to lightning, and it was unclear if Terry Bowden’s bunch were going to find an opponent to finish out their schedule. Akron accepted an offer from South Carolina to replace the missing affair, although they are not playing for much other than to simply finish out the 2018 campaign.

South Carolina had their week 3 game against Marshall postponed due to Hurricane Florence, The two teams will obviously not be meeting this season now since Marshall is traveling to Blacksburg, VA to take on the Hokies to make up their unplayed game.
That Marshall Virginia Tech meeting entailed quite a process, which came down to Virginia Tech ultimately having to win their rival game over Virginia to even decide they would play Marshall at all.
Akron Zips
When the Zips accepted South Carolina’s offer to visit their house to get their 12th game in, Akron was 4 – 4 and thinking that this could be a game they might need to become bowl eligible. Akron was 4 – 4 at the time of the announcement, but are now 4 – 7 and nowhere near a bowl bid now.
Akron has lost their last four games, although 3 of those 4 opponents will be heading to bowl games out of the MAAC. The home loss to Bowling Green 2 weekends ago really did the Zips in, because that would have been their 5th win, and this game would indeed have had bowl eligibility on the line.
Regardless, Akron is listed as nearly 30-point underdogs this weekend in Columbia, SC.
The Zips provided a path for Eastern Michigan to become bowl eligible just a few weekends ago, as sophomore QB Kato Nelson threw 3 interceptions on 3 consecutive drives in a 27 – 7 loss to the Eagles.

Last weekend’s loss to Ohio was actually one of Nelson’s best days of his career, although Ohio was up by at least 2 scores for almost all of the game. A 49 – 28 loss to the Bobcats was the dagger in the bowl hopes for Akron, and now they have to walk into SEC country as huge underdogs this weekend.
Nelson threw a career-high 4 TD passes in the loss, and added another career high in passing yards, totaling 356 yards completing 24 of 41 attempts.
South Carolina Gamecocks
The Gamecocks became bowl eligible two weekend’s ago with their 49 – 9 win over Chattanooga. Let’s also keep in mind that South Carolina got to open their season against Coastal Carolina, and now have Akron as part of their non-conference schedule. Not one person on the Bowl Committee is going to be impressed with a 7 – 5 Gamecock squad that ends up with 3 wins over much lesser opponents.
Blah Blah, we can talk about how a Terry Bowden led team will be ready for a fight, but that stopped happening a month ago. This is cupcake city, and the Gamecocks got their ass handed to them last weekend against Clemson, 56 – 35.
This is a game that will likely not be featuring much national attention, and the odds of junior QB Jake Bentley playing 60 minutes are slim and none. Bentley had a fantastic statistical performance against Clemson last weekend, but a 21-point loss doesn’t make anyone’s stats feel good. Bentley put up 510 passing yards last weekend and threw for 5 TDs in the loss.

There will be no 1000-yards rushers for the Gamecocks in 2018, and it will take 151 yards from wideout Deebo Samuel in the final two games to get him over the 1000-yard plateau this year.
This is a game to miss, and if you’re watching this one with any intensity, please have yourself checked out. Seriously, the Gamecocks could blow this thing wide open if they had any real reason to go out and do it, but a 7 – 5 record really isn’t going to change much.
