2019 Football Preview – Big 12- Red Raiders
Looking for 2019 Texas Tech Red Raiders predictions? Texas Tech got rid of Kliff Kingsbury after a string of mediocre seasons. The fact that he is now the coach of the Arizona Cardinals doesn’t change the fact that the program did not win a lot when he was at the helm even though the passing offense remained prolific. This is a reset.

Things are going to look a little different this season. Wells had Utah State playing really fast and wants that to continue in Lubbock. They might be a little more balanced though.
2019 Texas Tech Red Raiders Predictions: Team Strengths
Experience Up Front: Texas Tech has the most returning starts on the offensive line in the Big 12 coming into the season. That is a nice place to start with a new program.
There are going to be changes in terms of points of emphasis as the attack looks to be more balanced but that is a nice cushion.
Right guard Jack Anderson is all conference quality and the tackles should be among the best in the league even though they are switching sides.

Texas Tech has a quarterback coming back from injury this season and not much behind him. Keeping him upright is going to be a top priority
QB Tradition: Alan Bowman was having a great freshman season before getting hurt last season.
The injury was uncommon for football players – collapsed lung – so there is no reason to think it is going to dramatically impact his future. Unless it happens again.
The new coaching staff really likes his ability to make decision and put the ball where it needs to go. He might be less prolific but that will be more of a system effect.
2019 Texas Tech Red Raiders Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Defensive Personnel?: Wells’ Utah State teams were great on defense…full stop.
The personnel he and his staff are going to be better at Texas Tech but only time will tell if they can develop into a great defensive unit. Texas Tech does not have the history of doing it so new players might be required.
Similar to the offense this group is going to be more aggressive and try and set the tone of games more. Wells wants them to stop taking a seat to the offense.

The biggest challenge they are going to have on defense will be the secondary. You have to be able to defend the pass in the Big 12 and they have a lot of questions in the secondary.
On the opposite side of the ball the receiving core is as unproven as any group they have had in Lubbock in a while. McLane Mannis is a key transfer from Nevada who could be the top option but it is hard to say.
Texas Tech is going to incorporate a tight end more than they have in a decade but they might not have the personnel there either.
Texas Tech Red Raiders Prediction: 5-7
I really liked the Wells hire. He can help elevate the program and win some games.
This season might look a lot different on the field but in the standings it won’t look all that different.
A nonconference game at Arizona will be an important swing game. I have them losing it but they might need it for bowl eligibility.

The most winnable games on their league schedule are in the latter half. It will be important for some patience being exercised. It is year one and expectations might be unrealistic. The Red Raiders might be on a better path to being good but they are not good yet.
