Oregon State won just one more game all season, a 41-34 overtime victory over Colorado on Oct. 27.
This season, nobody is expecting the Beavers to be a national title contender, Pac-12 championship hopeful or even North Division middle-tier squad. But Jonathan Smith has an opportunity here to try out some new things with a program that’s fallen seriously flat, which could create for some entertaining football along the way, even when the wins aren’t anywhere to be found.
2019 Oregon State Beavers Predictions: Team Strengths
Zero Pressure, Zero Expectations: We have to say it. We’re not being rude; it just has to be said.
Any victories this team can come across will be bigger for them than most based on the simple fact that they need to build a winning culture from the ground up. Barring an off-field controversy, this team will be outside of the national spotlight all season.
That’s not usually something worth highlighting for a Major 5 program, but with a second-year head coach still establishing himself as an authority in the program, having at least another year outside the spotlight will do wonders for a program in transition.

Linebacker: There aren’t a lot of positions worth calling out as positives on this roster, but linebacker is one of them. Hamlicar Rashed is probably one of the few players on this side of the ball who could get national attention this season, and Shemar Smith is looking to build upon his 85-stop season.
Receiver: We won’t go as far as to say this group of receivers will make a huge difference this season, but on a game-to-game basis, they can definitely be counted upon for big plays. Isaiah Hodgins and Trevon Bradford will lead the way, but there are playmakers behind them to add depth to the rotation.
2019 Oregon State Beavers Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Quarterback: The Beavers actually have a chance to turn this category around in 2019 with the built-up receiving corps. But we can’t give them the benefit of doubt just yet.
As of this writing, the starting gig is still up for grabs between returning QB Jake Lutton and Nebraska transfer Tristan Gebbia. Lutton’s big arm and experience in the system could give him the edge, but Gebbia looks more the complete player and could force Oregon State into the never-ideal-but-always-intriguing dual-quarterback system early in the season.
Consistency, though, would be preferred. Time will tell on this one.

Offensive Line: Regardless of who Oregon State goes with at quarterback, the O-Line must—let’s emphasize must—be better this season. If not, you can count on that QB category staying in the weaknesses category all year.
In 2018, Oregon State gave up 48 sacks 99 tackles for loss. Both were dead last in the country.
Defense: We could break this up into a number of different categories, but just know this: The Beavers allowed 537 yards and 46 points per contest last season.
Both were second-to-last in the country.
Oregon State Beavers Prediction:
It’s tough to say which is more important at this point as far as both short- and long-term goals are concerned in Corvallis, but both the offensive line and the defense at large must show improvements if you expect to see any development across the board.

Although three wins would be considered a good season, expect Jonathan Smith to sport the same two-win record that he had in his first campaign by the end of 2019.
2020 is where this program needs to see tangible improvement before it starts to consider wholesale change. That gives this team plenty of wiggle room in a rebuilding season—but the improvements better be seen and felt behind the scenes, or else the hot seats will start hitting egg-frying status soon rather than later.
