Nebraska is 50/1 to win the 2019 FBS Championship. Only Michigan (14/1) and Ohio State (16/1) placed higher in the Big Ten. Does that make the Cornhuskers the conference’s third best squad despite their 4-8 record a year ago?
2019 Nebraska Cornhuskers Predictions: Team Strengths
Yo Adrian…Stay Healthy: Martinez is the key for Nebraska, especially as they struggle to find players to step up at some of the other skill positions. As a freshman in 2018 – and in just 10.5 games – Martinez threw for 2617 yards, 17TD, and 8 INTs.
Martinez was also sacked an official count of 23 times a year ago. Not only that, he ran the ball 140 times for 629 yards and another 8 TDs. Martinez is a young enough guy to absorb the hits and his mobility is definitely an asset. That being said, as little damage as possible as physical teams such as Ohio State, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Iowa should be the goal for Martinez in 2019.

The reason for Martinez to stay healthy in the upcoming year is because #2 on the depth chart is Noah Vedral who was a whopping 2-9 for 29 yards a season ago. Nebraska returns three starters on the O-line, but will also go with a freshman C in Cameron Jurgens. There are no seniors in the offensive trenches for Nebraska.
Replacing Morgan May Already Be Done: One of the biggest beneficiaries of Martinez’ breakout season in ’18 was Stanley Morgan Jr., who hauled in 70 catches for 1,004 yards. Morgan is off to the NFL but the Cornhuskers are excited for Wan’Dale Robinson to pick up some of the lost production. The freshman comes in after scoring 130 TD and amassing over 10,000 all-purpose yards in high school.
2019 Nebraska Cornhuskers Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Filling In the Pieces: Nebraska is going to have a lot of big name players on the field this season but one of their weaknesses has to be the unestablished role players. The ‘Huskers do return 15 starters, including WR J.D. Spielman (66 rec. 818 yards in ’18) but the running game is a huge question mark. An iffy running game and a young-ish OL puts a lot of pressure on Martinez and the WR corps.
NU was just 4-8 last year which may lead to the thought that they still have a long way to go to be contenders. 5 of those losses were by 5 points or less however including @ Northwestern (31-34), @ Ohio State (31-36) and @ Iowa (28-31). Nebraska may be closer than people think – especially in Frosts’ 2nd season.

It’s also not going to be all about offense in Lincoln this season. In 2017 and 2018 “the Blackshirts” have allowed over 31 ppg. That number should go down in ’19 thanks to the 2nd year in Erik Chinander’s defense as well as the return of seven 5th year seniors and a bevy of junior contributors. Nebraska starts all upperclassmen on defense heading into the season opener against South Alabama.
Nebraska Cornhuskers Prediction: 10-2
It’s very doable for Nebraska. They have an electric young QB, an incoming potential superstar playmaker, and an experienced defense.
The schedule also lines up nicely for Nebraska in the upcoming year. South Alabama, @Colorado, and Northern Illinois gives the ‘Huskers three winnable games to start the year. Nebraska gets to fine tune in the conference with a visit to Illinois before getting into the nitty gritty.
Almost every major Big Ten game is in Lincoln in 2019. That includes visits from Ohio State, Northwestern, Wisconsin, and Iowa. If Nebraska can survive letdowns on the road at Minnesota, Purdue, and Maryland they should have their ticket to the Conference title game punched rather easily.

Nebraska was just 4-8 a year ago but they know they left a lot of wins on the table. That leads to a team that won’t be complacent and will be playing with the chip on their shoulder that they need. An easy non-conference schedule should give Martinez some huge Heisman hype and the Nebraska defense the momentum they need to roll through the Big 10.
