They’ll look to win more than seven games, something they haven’t done since 2009 when they won eight games and went across the country to get beat by the USC Trojans in the Emerald Bowl.
2018 Boston College Predictions: Team Strengths
The Balance of Youth…: Sophomore A.J. Dillon is one of the best halfbacks in the country. The Eagles pounded Dillon and he was instrumental to their success.
Dillon carried the ball exactly 300 times and ran for just under 1,600 years – 1,589 to be exact. Dillon carried the ball at least 23 times in eight of their last nine games and he carried the ball at least 32 times in four of those games, as well.

Dillon also rushed for over 200 yards twice and he was basically the reason why Boston College upset Louisville on the road last year. He ran for 272 yards and four touchdowns in that game.
…And Experience: While whether Brown or Perry throws the majority of the passes is up for debate, what isn’t debate is senior tight end Tommy Sweeney will be the safety blanket in the passing game.
Sweeney is scheduled to be one of the first tight ends to go in the 2019 NFL Draft and he will be utilized. He was the leading receiver last year and I’d be willing to bet he will be the leading receiver this year, so long as he stays healthy, of course.
While Boston College lost plenty of big pieces on the defensive side of the ball, including Harold Landry and Ty Schwab, this is a Boston College team that still has plenty of experience.
Zach Allen, who had 100 tackles last year and led the team in sacks with six, is back along with Connor Strachan – who led the team in tackles two years ago – is back from injury. Denis Lukas, Will Harris, Ray Smith, and Ray Wyatt, and seniors are back as well.
Also, on the offensive side of the ball, while the Eagles have some young dynamic playmakers, their entire offensive line is back.
2018 Boston College Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Air Ball: Boston College is a solid team, relatively speaking. The Eagles don’t have a ton of weaknesses, but unfortunately, one of their biggest weaknesses is at the quarterback position.
Anthony Brown started at quarterback as a true freshman last year. Unfortunately, his year was cut short due to a knee injury. And he made plenty of mistakes as a true freshman.

Brown was very inconsistent last year and he made plenty of plays, but he also made plenty of bad plays, as well. Brown completed barely over 50% of his passes and he threw for just eleven touchdowns and nine interceptions.
Sophomore E.J. Perry has taken over the reins at quarterback in the spring sessions while Brown continues to rehab his knee. We’ll have to see if Perry is good enough to take over for good at quarterback this year, or if it will be a juggling act.
Boston College Prediction: 6-6
Seven wins has been Boston College’s magic number of late, but it’ll be a struggle to get there this year. Boston College has a tough schedule that is back-loaded.
They may only have five road games, but all five road games are in extremely tough. This year, they get Wake Forest, Purdue, NC State, Virginia Tech, and Florida State on the road. Most of those are tough environments. And, it’s not like their home games are any walk in the park, either.

Louisville, Miami, and Clemson will travel up to Chestnut Hill. There is absolutely no room for error. They should win their first three home games, but sandwiched in the middle are road games against Wake Forest and Purdue.
They need to start the year with at least four wins. They obviously would love to win all five, and if they do, they should be bowl eligible and perhaps get to that magic number of seven wins. But, they can’t afford to go 3-2.
Otherwise they’ll have to steal a couple of games against NC State, Louisville, Miami, Virginia Tech, Clemson, and Florida State. Not exactly an easy task.
Unless something unusual happens, the Eagles will be underdogs against all six teams listed above. And, of course, I’m assuming that they’ll beat Syracuse to end the year, but, it’s not as if that is a stone cold lock.
This has been a gritty team over the years and I will say that they start the year four win, they beat Syracuse and I’m going to say that they upend Miami, at home, in October.
Upsets happen and I think they find a way to get to bowl eligibility. I’m definitely not confident in that, I could see them coming up short and winning only four or five games, but I’ll say they get to six wins.
