2017 Football Preview – Big 12 – Cyclones
Looking for 2017 Iowa State Cyclones predictions? It was a tough, but a very valuable learning experience for the Cyclones in 2016. It was a tough year for Iowa State who only won three games, but it was a positive first step in the Matt Campbell era. The Cyclones won a couple of games they should have won, they won a game they shouldn’t, and they had their fair share of competitive games.

The Cyclones will look to build off some of that momentum from last year and carry it into the 2017 season.
2017 Iowa State Cyclones Predictions: Team Strengths
A Walk In The Park: Junior quarterback Jacob Park took over the majority of the snaps in the final five games and the Cyclones played some quality football during that stretch.

The Cyclones went 2-3 during that stretch and they were competitive in losses to Kansas State and Oklahoma. Park threw eight touchdowns and three interceptions and completing 60% of his passes. It should be encouraging for the Cyclones that they have a very solid quarterback that they can lean on.
Outside Weapons: Another encouraging sign for the Cyclones is that they have weapons on the outside for Park to throw to. Senior wide receiver Allen Lazard is back as he led the team in receptions (69), yards (1,018), and touchdowns (7) last year.
The Cyclones will hope that sophomore wide receiver Deshante Jones can follow up on his very good freshman season where he caught 37 balls for 536 yards. Senior Trever Ryen is back, along with junior Carson Epps, and big 6’6 sophomore Hakeem Butler who started getting more looks his way once Park took over.
2017 Iowa State Cyclones Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Rebuilding The Trenches: The strength of the Cyclones is on the offensive end, but their biggest weakness is also on the side of the ball, as well.

Iowa State is in total rebuild of their offensive line and that is a very dangerous place to be rebuilding. Without a strong foundation it is tough to take that next step. For the Cyclones it is to eventually become a bowl eligible team.
Iowa State will have to lean on Jake Campos who is coming off a lost season as he broke his leg before the season started. The Cyclones will have to have Campos healthy for an entire season to bring some stability to an offensive line unit that will start three freshmen.
Iowa State Cyclones Prediction
3-9
This is still a young team and this is still a major rebuilding process. They ended up with three wins last year by beating San Jose State, Kansas, and shockingly bombed out Texas Tech 66-10.
San Jose State isn’t on the schedule this year; instead they are replaced with Arkansas. This year, the Cyclones will have to travel to Lubbock to face Texas Tech.
Realistically, I can see the Cyclones winning one to three games. I see them beating the Jayhawks again this year with the help of home field advantage. That’s really the only game where I could comfortably say Iowa State will win after that it gets dicey.
The other winnable game will be opening day where they face Northern Iowa.

They played them last year and lost a tight one 25-20. Squeezing out anymore wins is a tough task. Maybe lightning can strike twice and they beat the Longhorns at home again or maybe they up end TCU or they pull out a win on the road somewhere.
I don’t know where, but this is college football and I think the Cyclones probably win a game they shouldn’t.
So, for me, I do have the Cyclones winning three games again, it might be a bit of a stretch, but this is a team with enough weapons that they can beat a team in their conference and shake things up a bit.
