While a player can be a star, if his team isn’t ranked near the top of the standings, the recognition seems to be gone.
Below are some of the frontrunners along with some darkhorses for the upcoming season.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Deshaun Watson (QB Clemson) +350
It’s not very often a QB doesn’t win the Heisman. Last year was one of those rare instances with Derrick Henry taking the trophy.
Watson opens up as the preseason favorite after nearly leading the Tigers to the National Championship last season.

Watson threw for 4104 yards in 2015 while throwing for 35 touchdowns. Watson led the Tigers to an undefeated season through the National Semi Finals, until they ran into Alabama in the championship.
Heading into this season, the Tigers are poised for another big season, with Watson having a big chance to throw up significant stats.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Leonard Fournette (RB LSU) +400
Fournette was on the unfortunate end of his team going ice-cold down the stretch of the 2015 season.
Fournette and the Tigers dropped 3 consecutive games in November. Two of the games saw Fournette perform at a high level. However, in one of the losses, the Tigers RB had just 31 yards, which pretty much sealed his fate.

He is set for another big season here in 2016, as the Tigers still don’t have a solidified QB to call the shots.
Fournette is tough to back still as the Tigers must have a big season themselves. The votes tend to go against players of teams who aren’t high in the rankings. While Fournette has plenty of talent to win the Heisman, LSU better have a big year themselves to help his cause.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Christian McCaffery (RB Stanford) +500
The numbers the Stanford RB threw up in 2015 was absolutely on a different level.
McCaffery had just 3 games under 100 yards and went over 200 yards 3 times. What makes him so good is his dual threat ability.
He was one of Stanford’s go to receivers out of the backfield, with notable back to back 105 yard receiving performances against USC and Iowa to close the season out.
He may have the best value on the board. McCaffery really came into the spotlight last season and is now set to take the next step this season.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: JT Barrett (QB Ohio State) +1000
The Ohio State QB will certainly have a chip on his shoulder this season.
Barrett was benched last season for Cardale Jones and watched the Ohio State Buckeyes struggle offensively. Barrett was slowly worked back into the offense before he won the job back and turned the Buckeyes season around.
It’s now Barrett’s team and nothing will hold this QB back.
Barrett’s dual threat ability makes him a viable candidate here in 2016, but will certainly have his Heisman fate tested early in the season against Oklahoma.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Dalvin Cook (RB Florida State) +1200
With Winston not around anymore, it’s Dalvin Cook’s team here in 2016.
Cook is arguably the biggest home run threat in college football and has a solid 2015 season to build off of. Cook finished with 1691 yards and 19 touchdowns, but will be looking to avenge his poor Peach Bowl performance against Houston.
Cook is still young and has a lot of growing pains to overcome. Protecting the football will be the biggest factor for him in regards to Heisman.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds: Baker Mayfield (QB Oklahoma) +1200
Baker Mayfield comes in off a very impressive 2015 season.
He threw for 3700 yards to go along with 36 touchdowns and just 7 interceptions. The Texas Tech transfer never really struggled throughout the season, but his inability to convert in the red zone did hurt him at times.

Like JT Barrett, Mayfield has an early chance to either get put into the spotlight or get kicked out real quick.
If he can perform against the Buckeyes, Mayfield could jump to front-runner.
2017 Heisman Trophy Odds:
- Deshaun Watson (QB Clemson) +350
- Leonard Fournette (RB LSU) +400
- Christian McCaffery (RB Stanford) +500
- JT Barrett (QB Ohio State) +1000
- Chad Kelly (QB Ole Miss) +1200
- Dalvin Cook (RB Florida State) +1200
- Baker Mayfield (QB Oklahoma) +1200
- Nick Chubb (RB Georgia) +1400
