2017 Central Michigan Chippewas Predictions: Team Strengths
Pressure from the front 4: The defensive line has not been a productive unit the last couple of year while dealing with major injuries from key contributors from the end and tackle positions.
Former All-conference defensive end Joe Ostman returns and leads this talented unit. Last year the line picked up just 20 sacks and gave up 4.6 yards per carry to opposing runners.
Mitch Stantizek is the end on the other side of the line and should provide pressure in key situations as well.
Ostman should return to his 2015 form and is definitely a candidate for the Mac-All conference team.

Deep and Experienced at WR: The Chippewas benefited from Cooper Rush under center the last 4 seasons, and the receiving corps put up pretty good numbers.
Senior wideout Corey Willis should be a candidate for the All-Conference team. As a junior he had over 1,000 yards receiving and can make defenders miss in the open space.
The quarterback position is a major question mark for CMU, but the right QB-WR combo should be able to make plenty of plays once conference play starts.
Also look for Mark Chapman and Tyler Conklin to be threats receiving the ball as well as they both topped 500 yards last season.
2017 Central Michigan Chippewas Predictions: Team Weaknesses
Who will line up under center?: When you replace a four year starter there will definitely be questions about their replacement for the upcoming season. Cooper Rush will go down as one of the best QB’s in CMU history and whoever steps in will have big shoes to fill.
The first to get a crack at it will more than likely be redshirt freshman Tony Poljan, a former top 50 QB. This is actually surprising to me with grad transfer Shane Morris sitting at #2 on the depth chart. He is talented even though he didn’t get much chance to start at Michigan.
Can this unit replicate Rush’s number? I don’t think so but they should still have enough firepower to make noise in the division.

The secondary can only go up Central Michigan defensive backs had a tough time slowing down the passing game last season. The unit as a whole gave up 33 touchdowns and only picked off thirteen passes.
They also gave up a 60% completion percentage and will need to make more plays on the ball in order to turn things around as a unit.
Amari Coleman and Josh Cox are returning as starters at each cornerback spot, and they will need to be vastly improved defending passes in the red zone. Don’t expect them to play at an All-Conference level, but they should play much better in 2017.
Central Michigan Chippewas Prediction: 7-5
Central Michigan will be slightly improved this year, and should easily get to 5 wins, their swing games will ultimately determine if they can get to a bowl game for the 2017 season.
