2017 ACC Season Football Preview
Looking for 2017 ACC Conference odds & predictions? Clemson were the national champs last season and this year they have the third best odds to win the conference, in their own division. That is a pretty quick primer to the state of things in the better than you know ACC. Looks like there are a few teams that bear watching heading into this season.

There are not a lot of changes to the group of usual suspects but the ordering is a little different from the past few seasons.
2017 ACC Conference Odds: Florida State Seminoles +135
Florida State and Clemson have been battling each other for the last few seasons. With Clemson braking in a new QB the advantage switches back to the Seminoles.
FSU has QB DeAndre Francois back after a strong freshman season. I thought he was going to be more of a dual threat but either way he has shown he can direct an offense and can improve.

Losing Dalvin Cook to the NFL is a setback but Cam Akers is the top recruit to the ACC and one of the best RB recruits in the country. The running game is in good hands.
If I were coach Jimbo Fisher I might be more worried about the receiving corps. Three new starters of varying experience will form that group.
FSU was good not great on defense last season. However, 6 of 7 return up front so we should see more of what we are used to on that side of the ball.
Also, Derwin James returns after losing last year due to injury. He might be the best secondary player anywhere in college football and is a versatile talent.
Florida State is looking like a playoff contender but we will find out very soon as they take on Alabama to start the season. A win will send them on their way and even a loss won’t be too damaging provided they don’t get roughed up.
2017 ACC Conference Odds: Louisville Cardinals +350
If you are going to upset the hierarchy in your conference it helps to have the Heisman Trophy winner in your pocket.
That would be Louisville Cardinals QB Lamar Jackson, who despite the hardware is looking for a more complete season in 2017. Perhaps he can do what only one other player has done and win two stiff arms.

To do so he might need more team success this season which might be tough given there are only 4 starters returning on offense. Jackson is a supreme talent but when he thinks he has to do it all himself he is prone to mistakes. Despite his superlative talent.
Seven starters return on defense including three in the secondary. The defense was helped by the pressure Jackson and Co put on opponents but last year down the stretch they faded giving up 36, 41 and 29 points in back to back to back losses.
Louisville is looking a lot like a one man team this season which is both scary and exciting for Cardinals fans an opponents alike.
We will know a lot about the Cards by the end of the first month. A road trip to North Carolina and a home date with Clemson are definitely potential losses.
2017 ACC Conference Odds: Clemson Tigers +400
Clemson is currently at the top of the mountain but staying there will likely depend on finding a replacement at quarterback.
As important as QB is, if you believe that games are won in the trenches than this group will be just fine with four O-linemen returning and 3 on the defensive line.
That defensive line is probably the best in all of college football too. Christian Wilkins and Dexter Lawrence are immovable forces up front that have NFL futures.
Even though whoever the quarterback is will not have much game experience he will have a trio of experienced weapons to spread the ball around to. It will be OK if he is just a game manager the way the defense looks.
Clemson does not look like they have fallen far from a year ago in terms of talent but without Deshaun Watson at the controls they may have lost their X-factor – probably the understatement of the season.
2017 ACC Conference Odds: Miami Hurricanes +800
All of the odds tell you that the ACC Champ is most likely to come out of the Atlantic Division.
Miami looks like the best team in the Coastal provided they can find an adequate replacement for departed QB Brad Kaaya.
Either way I look for the Canes to ramp up the running game. Mark Richt always had strong running teams at Georgia and there is good experience at RB and on the line.

Those Georgia teams always had good defense too and last year the Hurricanes snuck up to 12 in scoring defense giving up just 18ppg. You can definitely win with that.
The secondary is doing a complete reload with all new starters but the front seven will have 6 returnees. Sophomore Shaquille Quarterman is reminiscent of the Miami linebackers of old.
Miami plays their annual game against FSU on the road but given they get division rival Virginia Tech at home they could probably survive an early loss and still take the division and play in the ACC title game for the first time.

Atlantic Coast Conference: 2017 Prediction
This is one of the toughest conferences to call because there are a few teams that are truly capable. Clemson has won the last two and they and FSU have split the last 6.
Even though taking a team like Miami could be fun I think it is wiser to go with recent history here. Take chalky FSU. At +135 that is not such a terrible return.
