Philadelphia had a solid run in the NL East a few seasons back and Washington won the title in 2012, but the Atlanta Braves have pretty much owned this division since 1991 with 17 postseason appearances over the span of 23 years.
The Cleveland Indians somehow won 92 games last season and snuck into the playoffs. In fact, they even pushed Detroit for the division title but there is no way they don’t take a step back this year.
After being competitive the previous couple of season the Chicago White Sox fell off the map last year. This was just an all around poor team that had weaknesses in their lineup and a pitching staff that was nowhere near good enough to compensate…it didn’t help that the Indians and Royals suddenly got good either.
For three consecutive seasons the Houston Astros have a set a franchise record in losses while posting the worst record in baseball, including a 51-111 finish in 2013.
The youth movement in Washington over the past few seasons that has added players such as Stephen Strasburg and Bryce Harper have helped set the stage for success for a number of years to come, but the Nationals will first have to overcome the disappointment of last season.
The Padres were able to overcome some injuries woes a year ago to compile a 76-86 record, with the team winning 16 of its 27 games in the month of September to bring some hope into the offseason.
The Rockies are a team that is surely making onlookers scratch their heads. The team has an odd mix of young and old talent, spending money to bring in aging veterans like Michael Cuddyer and Justin Morneau, despite appearing to be in a rebuilding stage.
The Giants finished 76-86 just a year after winning the World Series, and that did not sit well with the team’s front office this offseason.
The Royals have been on an upward trend for the last 5 years and their biggest leap came last year when they won 14 more games than the year before.
The Diamondbacks could have been content with an 81-81 season a year ago and simply allowed some of their young talent to continue to developing which would have likely been enough to at least carry the team to a Wild Card spot this season.
The Dodgers are willing to spend money. A lot of money.
We get it.
It’s hard to find a fan base that stays upbeat better than the Cubs fans, but last year’s Cubs team didn’t give them anything to cheer about. Chicago went 66-96 on the year, and the Cubs were a brutal 31-50 at Wrigley Field.
The Mariners didn’t make a lot of moves during the offseason, but what moves they did, were huge. However, it will still remain to be seen if that single daring move will equate to a better 2014 season, after finishing with a 71-91 record just one year ago.
Milwaukee experienced a significant dropoff from 2012 to 2013. The Brewers went just 74-88 last year. Milwaukee had a good roster to start the year off, but not many of their stars stayed on the field last year.
The Cincinnati Reds won 90 games last year, but they were considered a bit of a disappointment. Cincinnati faded down the stretch and finished the season by losing four straight games to the Pittsburgh Pirates, including the one-game playoff between the two wild card teams.
