Week 12: Wisconsin vs. Illinois Preview & Free Pick

Wisconsin vs. Illinois

Remember when Illinois started 6-0 this season? It’s difficult to remember for Illinois fans, since they have lost four straight to fall to 6-4. The road doesn’t get any easier as the Fighting Illini host Wisconsin this weekend.

Ron Zook will be back on the hot seat quickly if the Fighting Illini can’t finish strong this year. Bret Bielema and the Badgers need to keep winning to have a chance to win the Big Ten Leaders Division.

Wisconsin suffered two straight heartbreaking losses to Michigan State and Ohio State in late October, but this Badgers team is one of the best in the nation. In fact, I believe they have a solid shot at finishing in the top eight in the country. One very concerning issue for the Badgers is injuries all across the offensive line. Wisconsin’s biggest strength is its offensive line, but they currently have three lineman listed on the injury report. Russell Wilson has been putting up Heisman Trophy type numbers this season. Wilson is completing 73 percent of his passes and he has 25 touchdowns and just three interceptions. Montee Ball has an amazing 27 touchdowns in just ten games, and he is also averaging 6.7 yards per carry. This may be the most balanced offense in the nation.

Some wondered how the Wisconsin defense would fare this year, but they have been very solid. The defense struggled in losses to Michigan State and Ohio State, but overall this year they have been great. The Badgers are giving up just 15.8 points per contest, and they are fifth in the nation in total defense. The secondary has been great all season, but the front seven has struggled at times against good running offenses.

Illinois has struggled largely because their offense has been extremely inconsistent over the last four games. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Fighting Illini are averaging just ten points per game in their last four contests. Nathan Scheelhaase is a solid dual-threat quarterback, but this offense lacks the weapons necessary to score on the best defenses. A.J. Jenkins has 76 receptions and seven touchdowns, but no other receiver has more than 23 catches. Jason Ford and the running game haven’t been able to get going of late either. Illinois must find a rhythm offensively if they are going to have a chance in this game.

The Fighting Illini defense has been very good this year. Illinois ranks ninth in the nation in total defense. This is especially impressive when you consider that the Fighting Illini lost their two best defenders from last year’s squad. This is a defense that limits big plays and does a nice job clogging up the running lanes in the middle of the field. Opponents are scoring just 18.6 points per game.

Wisconsin has too much firepower for Illinois. The Fighting Illini are searching for an identity on offense right now, while Wisconsin is racking up huge numbers. Expect the Badgers to roll in this one.

Week 11: Wisconsin vs. Minnesota Preview & Free Pick

Wisconsin vs. Minnesota

Wisconsin had higher hopes for this season, but they still have plenty to play for. The Badgers suffered two last minute losses in a row against Michigan State and Ohio State, but this is still a team capable of finishing in the top ten in the nation.

Wisconsin must now try to right the ship and win the Big Ten Leaders Division.

Minnesota has a solid new coach in Jerry Kill, but this team is a long ways from competing for a league title. The last couple weeks have been very positive steps for the Golden Gophers. These teams will meet Saturday afternoon in Minnesota.

Russell Wilson transferred to Wisconsin just weeks before the beginning of the season, and he has been terrific this year. Wilson is putting up Heisman Trophy type numbers for the Badgers. He has thrown 21 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He is also completing 72% of his passes. Even with Wilson under center, the strength of this team is the running game. The Badgers offensive line is dominating every single year, and this season is no different. Montee Ball is racking up huge numbers at the tailback spot. Ball is averaging 6.6 yards per carry, and he already has 24 touchdowns. This offense may be the most balanced in the nation. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

The Badgers defense has been good statistically this year, though they have allowed a couple of last minute touchdowns that cost the team dearly. This is a unit that wasn’t expected to be all that great this year, but they have done a nice job overall. The secondary has been terrific, while the front seven has struggled at times against the best running teams.

Minnesota looked lost when MarQueis Gray was out of the lineup, but with him back and healthy under center the team has looked much better in their last couple games. Gray isn’t a very efficient passer at this point in his career, but he is definitely a play maker. Despite injury trouble, Gray is easily the Golden Gophers leading rusher. The team has one elite receiver in Da’Jon McKnight, but they are lacking a solid second option. This offense is averaging just 18.7 points per game.

The Golden Gophers defense has been terrible the last few years, and this season is no different. To be fair, this is a defense that has been decimated by injuries this season. Troy Stoudemire is the team’s best cover corner, but he has missed the last five games with a wrist injury. He is listed as questionable for this contest. The rushing defense is allowing opponents to run for 191 yards per game this year. The run defense will be tested in a big way this weekend.

I expect Wisconsin to move the football at will on Saturday afternoon. I don’t like laying this many points, but Wisconsin is so much better than Minnesota at this point that I feel like this is still a solid value.

Week 7: Indiana vs. Wisconsin Preview & Free Pick

Indiana vs Wisconsin

Wisconsin 83 Indiana 20 is what the scoreboard read after last year’s meeting between these two. The Badgers absolutely annihilated the Hoosiers, and they set several Big Ten records in the process.

Indiana is just as bad as they were last year, and Wisconsin may even be better than last year.

Can we expect the same type of massive blowout in this matchup?

Kevin Wilson took over the Hoosiers football program in the offseason. Wilson has implemented a new faster paced offense, but it hasn’t done anything to help the team’s results as of yet. The quarterback spot has been a big question mark this year after Ben Chappell graduated at the end of 2010. Edward Wright-Baker started the year at quarterback, but he has missed the last few games with an ankle injury. Wright-Baker is expected back this weekend, but don’t be surprised if Tre Roberson gets some time under center as well. The Hoosiers really don’t have an established running back, and that really hurts this offense. The two main play makers for this offense are Demarlo Belcher and Kofi Hughes on the outside, and they need to get the ball more often.

Indiana’s defense has been terrible for several years in a row, and things really aren’t any different this season. Despite playing a weak schedule so far this year, the defense has given up 27 points per game. The front seven continually has a horrible time stopping the run, and that will be a real issue against the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s offense was only missing a quarterback as they headed into the offseason after last year’s Rose Bowl loss. Russell Wilson transferred in to the program and the Badgers picked up a Heisman Trophy type quarterback that has become the center of the team’s offense. The Badgers offensive line continues to be dominating, and the running game is as strong as ever. Now, the Badgers also have a solid passing game to go along with the running attack. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Wilson has the mobility to keep plays alive, and he also has the big arm to stretch the defense. Wisconsin is averaging 48 points per game so far this year. This is an offense without a weakness, and they are clearly one of the best in the country.

The Wisconsin defense has been much better than most expected them to be so far this season. Wisconsin is giving up just 10.2 points per game, and they rank seventh in the nation in total defense. Chris Borland has emerged as a leader for this defense. The Badgers secondary has been great against the pass this year. If Wisconsin’s defense continues to be dominant, the Badgers will be extremely difficult to beat this year.

It’s hard to imagine Wisconsin winning this one by 63 points like they did last year, but this game should get very ugly. I think the Badgers have a good chance of getting to 55 or 60 by themselves, so I like the over in this one.
