It is hard to picture how they did it but Wake Forest won the ACC and played in the Orange Bowl back in 2006. It turned out to be a serious outlier as the program slowly but surely fell back to earth, ultimately costing coach Jim Grobe his job.
What is Wake Forest Football? For decades they were an also ran program in the ACC. They fought hard but usually came up short and then in 2006 they won 11 games, including a shutout at Florida State, and played in the Orange Bowl.
Wake Forest has had the same coach now for 11 years. The Demon Deacons are always fighting an uphill battle as the smallest school in the Bowl Subdivision. Team depth has been an issue for many years. Jim Grobe thinks the team’s overall depth is a little better this season.
Edsall comes to College Park after building the program at the University of Connecticut basically from the ground up. He was the 2010 Big East Coach of the Year and looks to assert a Terps team that has an excellent underclassmen quarterback, but not much else.
