Despite covering the spread seven times, the St. Louis Rams ended their season with a disappointing 3-13 SU record. The Rams appear to be in full rebuilding mode following a season that saw a majority of their star players injured at some point. QB Marc Bulger had a tough season, throwing 15 interceptions to go with just 12 TDs. Bulger is fully capable of playing at a Pro Bowl level and with better luck this year; he may get a chance to prove it.

The AFC North might as well be called “How The Mighty Have Fallen”. Baltimore is soul searching, Cincinnati is just trying to stay out of the slammer and Pittsburgh has gone offensive. Meanwhile, Cleveland has risen amongst the ashes to become the favorite to win the division. Can they repeat their Cinderella season? Or will one of the other three pick themselves up off the mat?
THE FAVORITE – Cleveland Browns (+175 to win division)
Why do I love the Browns over the NFL odds-on favorite? Simple. This is a team that is accustomed to running the score, and keeping pace with the full-throttle offenses in the league. They averaged a stunning 25.13 point per game on offense, and have added speedster Donte Stallworth to help free Braylon Edwards and Kellen Winslow Jr.
The Philadelphia Eagles are 3 ½-point home favorites Thursday night against the Carolina Panthers as both teams try to show they’re for real in the NFC.

USC has won the Pac-10 title every year since 2003, including a run of 33 victories in 34 games from October 12, 2002 through October 21, 2006. However, the Trojans’ complete and utter dominance has taken a wrong turn of late, with four losses in their last 14 conference tilts. They have also finished just 7-11 ATS the last two seasons in league play.
Arizona State has failed to defeat USC since 1999, when the Sun Devils went into the L.A. Coliseum as six-point underdogs and walked off with the 26-16 victory. Can lightning strike nine years later? Dennis Erickson’s squad will be even stronger than last season’s 10-3 club, and has a great chance to pull off the upset on October 11.
The Pac-10 finished with the highest winning percentage (67%) both SU and ATS among the BCS conferences in head-to-head matchups vs. the other five power leagues. (The 8-4 records topped the SEC’s 12-9 SU and 11-10 ATS marks.) This season will be a different story as the conference will not be as strong with the departure of three of the top four quarterbacks and the top four rushing leaders. None of the 10 member schools will court any serious BCS title aspirations.

The Atlanta Falcons take on the Jacksonville Jaguars in each teams’ first NFL Pre-season game this weekend. The Falcons might start playing Matt Ryan right away.
There’s really nothing else to say about that other then Ryan has looked impressive in training camp and there’s no doubt that he’s got the mental outlook needed to be a quarterback in the NFL. I doubt you will find Ryan in a hot tub full of underdressed women, smoking a cigar.
Yes, he might not start the first game, but I don’t see him on the bench for that long this season. Besides Ryan the Falcons made a serious change at running back by signing Michael Turner away from the San Diego Chargers.
All indications are that Turner should have a big year. Those are good signs for a team that was anathema to online NFL betting fans last year.
The Jacksonville Jaguars are one of the favorites to make it to the Super Bowl from the AFC. They have a solid quarterback in David Garrard, who won’t play much in this game, and two terrific running backs in Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew. The Jags’ defense was sloppy at times last season. They will look to start correcting those issues this Saturday when they face the Falcons.

When in doubt in the NFL Pre-season, I always like to put money on the underdog. Why? Because that’s the way to make enough money offset loses. The Falcons have two decent running backs in Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood. The Jags have a solid team in almost every aspect.
Jacksonville is not the type of team that likes to march down the field and score touchdowns in two or three minutes. I expect them to work on timing, handing the ball off from Garrard to whatever running back is there, pulling their guards for sweep plays, and simply playing a Cover 2 defense in order to find out exactly how they are going to stop the Patriots, Steelers and now Jets in the AFC.
Atlanta, on the other hand, sort of has to show up for this game. They can’t afford to waste time with quarterbacks D.J. Shockley or Chris Redman if neither guy is going to be up to the challenge. They might as well throw Matt Ryan to the wolves if neither Shockley nor Redman can do it.
I think that since neither team is likely to establish themselves, or play their starters too long, I have to go with the Falcons at the online NFL betting odds of + 155.
I’ll take a gamble on the Falcons to beat the Jaguars at those nice online football wagering odds.
