Where do teams stand in the NHL?

Another two weeks of NHL action is in the books – there has been a shakeup in the top 12 in the Power Rankings. One team welcomed back their All-World goaltender and has seen a bump up to top spot while another team lost their keeper for an extended period of time – that team took a major hit in the Rankings.

The Hawks look to be over a slight funk at this time last week – they have reeled off two straight wins ahead of this contest – the last coming in St. Louis on Sunday – an impressive 4-2 win. The Coyotes on the other hand have lost two straight games and continue to be one of the league doormats.

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

It seems not a matter of IF Chicago will win this game but by how much they win by!

There is absolutely no secret as to why the Arizona Coyotes are one of the worst teams in the NHL – the average 2.24 goals for per game and allow 3.23. The team has scored just one goal in each of their last two games – both losses with little reason for optimism against a team that they scored just one goal against earlier this year.

To make matters worse for Arizona is the fact that they will be without Mikkel Boedker, Martin Hanzal and Joe Vitale Monday night – three of their biggest threats offensively. Martin Erat and Sam Gagner are pointless in their last three games and Michael Stone hasn’t hit the score sheet in eight games – meaning that offense likely won’t win Arizona this game.

[dfads params=’groups=16&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Mike Smith will get the call between the pipes Monday – he has been largely brutal this season – 9-22-5 with a 3.30 GAA and .894 save percentage. He has shown signs of snapping his year long slump lately – he is 1-1-1 in this last three starts 1ith a 1.30 GAA and .959 save percentage but has posted a 4.16 GAA in his last seven starts in this series.

The Chicago Blackhawks will be happy to be home after posting a 4-3 record on a seven game road trip. The problem was goal scoring. The teams totaled just 15 goals during the road trip – shocking considering the talent on this team.

Jonathan Toews has two goals in his last 19 games, while Patrick Sharp has one in 12, Marian Hossa has one point in six games, Duncan Keith is pointless in four games and Brent Seabrook hasn’t hit the score sheet in six games – you have to think those trends won’t last long!

Corey Crawford will be between the pipes – he’s been very good lately for the Hawks.

He is 3-1-0 with a 1.73 goals-against average and .938 save percentage in his last four and is the reason the Hawks were over .500 on the trip while struggling to score.

The Blackhawks have scored at least five goals five times during a 5-1-1 stretch in the series and won the only meeting of the season 6-1.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Arizona is 1-10-4 record against the Central Division this season.

NHL Gambling Trends

• Over is 8-0 in ARI last 8 Mon. games.
• Over is 7-2 in ARI last 9 vs. Central.
• Over is 10-3-1 in ARI last 14 road games.
• Over is 6-2-1 in CHI last 9 Mon. games.
• Over is 6-2 in CHI last 8 home games.
• CHI are 30-11 in their last 41 Mon. games.
• Road team is 9-3 in the last 12 meetings.
• ARI are 6-2 in the last 8 meetings in Chicago.

Simply put – this is a huge mismatch on paper and on the ice. Chicago is overdue for an enormous offensive explosion – I think it comes against a team they have beat up on the last couple of years.

Their opposition? The Buffalo Sabres who have lost 13 straight games ahead of Friday night’s affair and are 1-16-1 in their last 18 games – ugly. The biggest storyline ahead of the game however is Ryan Miller who will start against his former team – the one that he backstopped for nine years.

[dfads params=’groups=64160&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The Buffalo Sabres are a bad team – period. Case in point – they were thoroughly outplayed last night in Edmonton – the second worst team in the NHL. Absolutely nothing is working in Buffalo – the team is averaging a league-low 1.76 goals per game while surrendering an ugly 3.53 goals per game.

We’ll start with the defense and goaltending that has been dreadful during Buffalo’s 13 game losing streak. Thursday night’s starter Jhonas Enroth has lost eight straight contests with a 4.66 GAA while Buffalo’s other keeper Michal Neuvirth is also riding an eight game losing streak. His GAA over that span is 4.10. Translation – the Sabres have no reliable #1 that can or will keep them in games right now. The starter for Friday hasn’t been named but either way, it appears as though Buffalo is in trouble between the pipes.

[dfads params=’groups=16&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Buffalo’s offense isn’t likely to bail them out either on Friday night – they scored just twice against a terrible defensive team in Edmonton and are averaging just 1.76 goals per game on the year. There are some Sabres that have been OK offensively lately however – Tyler Ennis has four points in three games, Christ Stewart has four points in four games and Nikita Zadarov and Brian Gionta each have two points in their last two games.

Hey – I had to say something positive OK – there it is!

The Vancouver Canucks have been struggling lately – particularly in the offensive zone. A shutout loss Tuesday against Anaheim is proof. The team has now scored one goal or less in five of their last eight games. The power play hasn’t hit the board in the last nine games and absolutely no Canucks have stood out lately in the offensive zone.

You can bet that Vancouver will bring their best defensive effort on Friday ahead of Ryan Miller however – Miller has given the Canucks a chance to win each and every night despite the issues in the offensive zone. Miller allowed four goals on 24 shots against the Ducks – his worst effort in quite some time. He had gone 7-2-1 with a terrific 1.40 GAA prior to his current two game losing streak.

[dfads params=’groups=64161&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Miller will be eager to snap a personal mini-skid and to bring his best against his former team.

NHL Gambling Trends

• BUF are 9-47 in their last 56 road games.
• Under is 5-1-2 in BUF last 8 vs. Pacific.
• Over is 7-2-2 in BUF last 11 road games.
• VAN are 2-6 in their last 8 vs. Atlantic.
• Under is 18-7-1 in VAN last 26 overall.
• Home team is 11-3-1 in the last 15 meetings.

Buffalo has lost 13 straight games on the road and 13 straight games on the road – it is unlikely they snap that skid Friday. But there is ZERO value on the Moneyline ahead of this game – my play is the Spread.
