Indiana vs Michigan CBB Picks
The Hoosiers might have had a chance to sneak into the tournament but that home loss to Nebraska probably sealed their fate in that regard.
The Hoosiers might have had a chance to sneak into the tournament but that home loss to Nebraska probably sealed their fate in that regard.
The 20th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes will make the trip over to Assembly Hall for a date with the Indiana Hoosiers on Thursday. Iowa will be looking to snap a streak of consecutive losses, while Indiana has fropped four of its last five games.
The No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers roll into Bloomington on Tuesday to put their 16-game unbeaten streak on the line against a Hoosiers squad that narrowly escaped opening Big 10 play with three staring defeats on Saturday.
Tom Izzo will lead the fifth-ranked Michigan State Spartans into Bloomington to take on Tom Crean’s Indiana Hoosiers. The Spartans will be looking to win their sixth consecutive game, while Indiana will look to win their first Big Ten game after a devastating overtime loss in their conference opener.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will look to bounce back from a disappointing 60-35 victory over the Fighting Illini of Illinois. The Indiana Hoosiers are looking to bounce back as well.
In broad strokes this game doesn’t really mean that much. Wisconsin has pretty much no chance to make it to the Big Ten Championship Game while Indiana is in a fight just to get bowl eligible.
This game is a great contrast in styles. Indiana loves to throw the ball and has one of the most productive offenses in the nation, maybe the best in the conference, while Michigan State is all about defense and putting the clamps on you whether you like to run or throw it.
The Indiana Hoosiers basketball team has taken another giant leap toward greatness this year, as they’ve been named the No. 1 team in the country in the preseason AP and USA Today Polls. The team hasn’t been ranked first overall since 1979, but fifth-year head coach Tom Crean has been remarkable for the recovery of a program struggling to match up to its renowned tradition.
The Big Ten’s top dog Michigan State will look to continue their conference dominance on Tuesday, by notching its seventh straight victory with a win over the resurgent Indiana Hoosiers who have slide back into the top 25 by winning five of their last six.
Indiana (16-4) has lost 10 straight to Wisconsin (16-5) in Madison and to snap that losing streak they will need to find a way to score on a Badgers’ team that leads the nation in defense. NCAAB lines have Wisconsin as 7-point home favorites with a total of 126.
No. 2 Ohio State opened Big 10 play with big victory of Northwestern, and will now set their sights on adding to the Hoosiers misery after they were upset by Michigan State on Wednesday.
Michigan State is the team in control in the Big Ten Legends Division. The Spartans can’t afford a slip up, but they are one game ahead of both Michigan and Nebraska.
Indiana comes to town this weekend. The Hoosiers are 1-9 overall, and 0-6 in the Big Ten. Michigan State almost got tripped up by Minnesota a couple weeks ago. Will the Spartans be ready for this contest?

Kevin Wilson took over the Indiana football program in the offseason. Very little was expected of the team this year, but even with low expectations Hoosier fans can’t be too happy with how the season has gone. Indiana has lost to North Texas and Ball State, and their only win of the year came against South Carolina State. The team did look better in a hard fought 34-20 loss at Ohio State a couple weeks ago. Indiana has had two weeks to prepare for this one so it will be interesting to see if they come out ready to go.
Tre Roberson appears set to get another start at the quarterback spot for Indiana. Roberson is a freshman who has quick feet and is more comfortable running than throwing at this point in his career. As he develops his passing game, he should become a solid signal caller. DeMarlo Belcher has been dismissed from the team, which leaves the Hoosiers without their top wideout. Defensively, the secondary has actually been a pleasant surprise. On the other hand, the rushing defense has been horrendous. Indiana is giving up 246 yards per game on the ground. Opponents are scoring 36 points per game against this defense.

Michigan State picked up a huge win last weekend in Iowa City. The Spartans got revenge for last year’s embarrassing loss when they beat Iowa 37-21. It has been the Michigan State defense that has led the way all year long. Jerrell Worthy anchors a very tough defensive line. Worthy is expected to be a first round draft pick, and he receives a double team on nearly every play. The secondary has been a great surprise. The Spartans corners play great defense, and they have forced a lot of turnovers. Isaiah Lewis has four interceptions already this year. Michigan State is giving up just 16.5 points per game.
Kirk Cousins is the steady leader at the helm for the Spartans offense. Cousins has only thrown five interceptions in 297 passes this year. He has 16 touchdown passes and 2,249 yards through the air. Le’Veon Bell and Edwin Baker form a nice tailback tandem for the Spartans. The offensive line has been dinged up this year, but they are starting to get a little healthier. This offense hasn’t been dynamic, but they have come up with big plays when they are most needed.
Michigan State has a key battle in Evanston with Northwestern next weekend, and it wouldn’t be a big surprise if they overlook Indiana a bit here. The Hoosiers seem to be improving as the season moves along, and I think they can keep it within this big number.

Wisconsin 83 Indiana 20 is what the scoreboard read after last year’s meeting between these two. The Badgers absolutely annihilated the Hoosiers, and they set several Big Ten records in the process.
Indiana is just as bad as they were last year, and Wisconsin may even be better than last year.

Can we expect the same type of massive blowout in this matchup?
Kevin Wilson took over the Hoosiers football program in the offseason. Wilson has implemented a new faster paced offense, but it hasn’t done anything to help the team’s results as of yet. The quarterback spot has been a big question mark this year after Ben Chappell graduated at the end of 2010. Edward Wright-Baker started the year at quarterback, but he has missed the last few games with an ankle injury. Wright-Baker is expected back this weekend, but don’t be surprised if Tre Roberson gets some time under center as well. The Hoosiers really don’t have an established running back, and that really hurts this offense. The two main play makers for this offense are Demarlo Belcher and Kofi Hughes on the outside, and they need to get the ball more often.
Indiana’s defense has been terrible for several years in a row, and things really aren’t any different this season. Despite playing a weak schedule so far this year, the defense has given up 27 points per game. The front seven continually has a horrible time stopping the run, and that will be a real issue against the Badgers.
Wisconsin’s offense was only missing a quarterback as they headed into the offseason after last year’s Rose Bowl loss. Russell Wilson transferred in to the program and the Badgers picked up a Heisman Trophy type quarterback that has become the center of the team’s offense. The Badgers offensive line continues to be dominating, and the running game is as strong as ever. Now, the Badgers also have a solid passing game to go along with the running attack. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Wilson has the mobility to keep plays alive, and he also has the big arm to stretch the defense. Wisconsin is averaging 48 points per game so far this year. This is an offense without a weakness, and they are clearly one of the best in the country.
The Wisconsin defense has been much better than most expected them to be so far this season. Wisconsin is giving up just 10.2 points per game, and they rank seventh in the nation in total defense. Chris Borland has emerged as a leader for this defense. The Badgers secondary has been great against the pass this year. If Wisconsin’s defense continues to be dominant, the Badgers will be extremely difficult to beat this year.
It’s hard to imagine Wisconsin winning this one by 63 points like they did last year, but this game should get very ugly. I think the Badgers have a good chance of getting to 55 or 60 by themselves, so I like the over in this one.

Ron Zook seems to be on the hot seat every year, but his Fighting Illini are off to a very impressive start in 2011. Illinois is unbeaten, and they certainly have been one of the bigger surprises in college football so far this year.
Indiana has a new coach in Kevin Wilson, but it has been the same problems so far this year for the Hoosiers football team. Can Indiana get off the mat at home against Illinois?

Nathan Scheelhaase is one of the more underrated starting quarterbacks in college football right now. Scheelhaase is just a sophomore, but he has really raised his level of play this season. He is completing 69% of his passes compared to just 59% last year. Each game Scheelhaase is becoming more comfortable throwing the football, which makes him even more dangerous because of his dual-threat skills. Troy Pollard has emerged as a major threat in the backfield for Illinois. He is averaging 9.6 yards per carry in limited action this year. A.J. Jenkins is a star at the wide receiver spot, but Illinois lacks depth on the outside.
The Fighting Illini defense has been the real standout so far this year. After losing Martez Wilson and Cory Liuget most people thought this defense would suffer quite a bit this year. So far this year the Fighting Illini have been terrific against the run and solid against the pass. This is a defense that is allowing just 17.4 points per game. The defense will be without its second-leading tackler, Jonathan Brown, in this game. He is suspended for the game. [soliloquy id=”82219″]
Indiana has a real controversy at the quarterback position. Edward Wright-Baker and Dusty Kiel are locked in a battle to be the team’s signal caller. The biggest problem is that neither of them has been very good this year. This Hoosiers offense is much weaker than it was last year. In fact, they are averaging just 24 points per game this year. They need to find a way to get the ball to Demarlo Belcher more often.
The Indiana defense was a real problem last year, and that continues to be the case this season. The defense did play much better last week at home against Penn State, and they’ll look to build on that momentum in this one. The run defense has been the biggest issue for Indiana, as evidenced by the fact that they gave up 226 rushing yards against lowly North Texas. Can Indiana keep Illinois from running the ball down their throat?
Indiana’s defense has been significantly better at home, and Illinois has a very stout defense right now. I don’t expect either team to put up too many points in this one. Illinois should win this one, but I think the best play here is the under.
