A – Auburn. Tommy Tuberville is out as coach of the Tigers, but the circumstances, if the reports are to be believed, are odd. Even though his job was reportedly safe despite a lackluster 5-7 season, Tuberville stepped down this week. The administration says they were shocked, yet they decided to pay him his $5.1 million buyout even though they didn’t have to. Generous. Or stupid.

The college basketball season is slowly but surely get underway. It will be a while before people start paying a lot of attention, but it’s never too soon to start making some college basketball predictions. College basketball culminates in the single best spectacle in sports, but there is a lot of excitement and intrigue between now and the madness of March. As things get fired up, here is my random collection of college basketball predictions to get you thinking about the season ahead of us (all odds are from Bodog):
It’s simply amazing to me how perfectly in sync the Pac-10 Conference is this year in terms of football and basketball.
Both football and hoops seemed to peak last season as national powers, and with a mass exodus of its top performers the league has degenerated into a free-for-all.

A – Alexander, Shaun. The incredible fall from grace has taken a potentially brief detour to the nation’s capital. The former MVP needed a job, the Redskins needed running depth, and Daniel Snyder is more than happy to spend money without thinking about it – it was a match made in heaven.

I wish I could have started this column out with some good news as far as last week’s selections are concerned. However, that is not the case. We did nail a nice 5-unit winner with Penn State, as they completely destroyed Wisconsin, 48-7. We also had a nice winner with Mississippi State ending Vanderbilt’s perfect season, but those two wins did not come close to covering the disappointing losses that we had.
The Troy Trojans and the Florida Atlantic Owls will both be trying to pick up a win on Tuesday when they battle at Lockhart Stadium. Troy is a 3 point favorite the over under is 50.5.

Take UNLV over Utah State (Saturday 10:00 pm) The Rebels should be a much improved team in 2008 and will get off to a good start by knocking off the Aggies, a team that beat last year in Logan, 23-16. The Rebels return all of their offensive playmakers from 2007 and should be able to frustrate teams with the spread offense. They ran the ball really well last year against Utah State going for 173 yards on the ground and 4.6 yards per carry. The Aggies are predicted to finish last in a very competitive WAC Conference and must replace their quarterback and top receiver from 2007. Vegas jumps out early and will cruise to a much needed victory in the opener. This is a must win game for the Rebels if they want to go bowling and they will make a statement.
