MLB Handicapping – Contending Playoff Teams

MLB Wild Card Races

A baseball fan’s work is never done.

We’ve spent all year building up a working knowledge of Major League Baseball and how to make a buck or two off America’s national pastime. Are we going to jump off the gravy train now that football has started? This is exactly the time to bet on baseball. The market is soft, the teams that are out of the playoff hunt are losing as fast as they can, and the teams still in contention are giving it their all to make it to October.

MLB Weekend Top 10

The Milwaukee Brewers were 10-1 favorites heading into Thursday’s action to win the National League pennant. Bargain or bust? The Brewers were only two games behind the St. Louis Cardinals (6-1) in the NL Central, but the Cards have a run differential of +25 on the season compared to –6 for Milwaukee. It’s going to take a very strong second half to get the Brew Crew into the playoffs.

MLB Weekend Top 10

This week’s Top 10 bonanza is dedicated to the man who wears No. 10 for the Baltimore Orioles, Adam Jones. He drove in Curtis Granderson with a sac fly in the eighth inning as the American League (+100) beat the National League 4-3 at Tuesday’s All-Star Game. Jones barely got any mention for his game-winning RBI; Carl Crawford made the signature play of the day in the seventh with a leaping catch to take a home run away from Brad Hawpe and win the MVP honors.

2009 MLB Midsummer Classic Preview

2009 MLB All-Star Game Preview – Midsummer Classic

You can’t tell the players without a program – even when they’re All-Stars.

The rosters for Tuesday’s MLB Midsummer Classic keep changing at the 11th hour. The latest move over the weekend had Boston Red Sox 2B and reigning American League MVP Dustin Pedroia deciding to stay in Boston to be with his pregnant wife Kelli, who was hospitalized last week after showing signs of labor earlier than expected. Pedroia is being replaced by Tampa Bay Rays 1B Carlos Pena, the AL leader in home runs with 24.

MLB Weekend Top 10

Whatever you do, don’t win that 10th game. It’s cursed.

As we mentioned last week, Toronto Blue Jays ace Roy Halladay was the first pitcher in the majors to win 10 games this year. Halladay promptly went on the DL with a strained groin.

MLB Weekend Top 10

Sometimes we analysts make baseball betting way too complicated. We go on about obscure statistics, all sorts of day/night and home/road splits, and letdown spots. We search so hard for value that we often miss what’s right in front of us.

Take a look at this season’s MLB runline trends: Home underdogs are 144-95, good for just over 60%. Who needs to look farther than that to make some coin on baseball?

Best MLB Series To Bet On This Week

The Bettor’s Box

The number three has a hold on all of us. Baseball’s inherent beauty is all about threes: three strikes to an out, three outs to an inning, three groups of three innings to a game. That’s why we’re sticking with the format as we present the three best series and the three best single games to bet on this week.
