Big Al McMordie’s NBA Post-Season Betting Tips

How Do You Spell NBA Playoff Success?  T-E-A-M

Big Al
Big Al

You need talent, of course, to advance in the NBA playoffs. You need defense, too. Another key that is sometimes overlooked is a four letter word for postseason success: T-E-A-M. I thought of that this weekend as the young Oklahoma City squad battered the Lakers to tie their series 2-2.

Oklahoma City is now 3-0 ATS the last three games, winning two, and they’ve done it with teamwork and hustle. It’s impressive how a group with so many young players is playing with passion, even on the road.

NBA Playoffs: It’s in the Match-Ups

Big Al

The opening day of the NBA playoffs, last Saturday, had a pair of overs and a pair of unders, the kind of balance oddsmakers like. Even less surprising was that the game featuring the uptempo teams (Utah, Denver) sailed over the total, while defensive-oriented teams like the Heat, Celtics and Cavaliers sailed under.

2010 Final Four Handicapping/Betting Tips

Final Four:  The Value of Experience

Big Al
Big Al

This is an interesting Final Four from a handicapping perspective. In many respects, it’s a classic case of experience versus youth. Duke’s top four scorers and rebounders: two seniors, two juniors.

Michigan State, on the other hand, got a tough tourney break when it lost star guard Kalin Lucas, the leading scorer and assist man. Of its remaining top players, that leaves Raymar Morgan (junior), Durrell Summers (junior) and a pair of sophomores in Draymond Green and Delvon Roe.

Emotion, Underdogs and Rivalries,

Big Al
Big Al

Yes, I’m a bit of an animal lover. I’m partial to dogs more than cats. Not because dogs can fetch the newspaper, but because they can fetch the money. Many times dogs can be worth a serious look, especially in college football where emotion, tradition and fan support are such key components.

Friday Night Football Preview – Eastern Michigan Eagles vs. Toledo Rockets

At 7 pm, our complimentary College Football selection is on the Toledo Rockets minus the points over Eastern Michigan. The Eagles are 0-10 on the season, and will try to break into the win column with an upset over Toledo, which has lost three straight games. In its last time out, the Rockets were blasted 56-28 by Central Michigan, but most teams these days are. Toledo also dropped games to Miami-Ohio and Temple since its 20-19 upset win over Northern Illinois back on October 17.

Early NFL: What To Look For

Big Al
Big Al

The best time of the sports year kicks off this week as we begin the NFL season. From preseason play and recent history we can get a good idea about some of the strengths and weaknesses of several teams.

If you like to play totals keep in mind that the Minnesota Vikings were 3-1 under the total in preseason. Sure, all the talk has been on Brett Favre and what he potentially can give them — a star QB they have not had since Fran Tarkenton retired. But remember, Favre joins a run-first offense, one with a great offensive line and a pair of terrific RBs in Adrian Peterson and Chester Taylor.

With the NFL season just around the corner, this is good time to look at what might happen this fall on the gridiron. NFL Future Odds are out for each team.

A year ago in this column I looked at the Pittsburgh Steelers, who were projected for 9 wins, and wrote: “The Steelers had 10 wins in 2007 with the No. 1 ranked defense.

Baseball Totals: Parks and Lineup Changes

Offense has been down a bit the last few seasons in major league baseball. There are many theories about this, from teams shoring up the relief staff as many games are decided in the 6th, 7th and 8th innings, to the decrease in steroids. Another factor that’s always worth considering is the ballpark.

Big Al McMordie’s SB XLIII Betting Preview

Super Bowl: An Early Look

The theme of this Super Bowl is already evident: Defense or offense? The Cardinals have the No. 4 offense in the NFL, No. 2 in passing, behind QB Kurt Warner and a talented trio of three-1,000+ yard receivers. The physical Steelers have the No. 1 defense. History says defense wins championships, which is why Pittsburgh is favored. But there’s a reason they play the games, as we saw last season when the double-digit Giants stunned the 18-0 Patriots, 17-14.

Big Al: Week 15 NFL Handicapping Tips

Late Season NFL Adjustments

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t going to make the playoffs and have had a train wreck season. This wasn’t unexpected. A local writer for the KC Star pointed out, “The Chiefs aren’t built to win football games. They’re built to be $32 million under the salary cap while Arrowhead Stadium undergoes renovation.”

CFB Handicapping Tips – Week 8

Penn State at 11-1 Odds

If you’ve every played billiards or chess, you know that the best players don’t simply go shot to shot or move to move. Rather, they think two or three moves ahead. A pool player uses the current shot to smartly set up his next shot, and so on. There’s a similarity in sports wagering, as well. A successful handicapper should have a good eye for short term wins, and to think moves ahead for potential long term gains.
