Red Sox 2009 MLB Prediction

Boston Red Sox 2009 Season Wins Prediction

Boston Red Sox (2008 Record: 95-67, 2 GB in AL East – AL Wild Card Winner)

After coming within 3 measly runs of another AL Pennant in 2008, the BoSox are back with what could be a much stronger team.

While the boys from the Bronx grabbed the East Coast headlines this Winter by spending enough money to purchase a small country, GM Theo Epstein and crew took a somewhat different approach to retooling. By taking fliers on injury risks with tremendous upside and proven track records like John Smoltz, Brad Penny, and Rocco Baldelli, they may wind up getting the most bang for their buck out of all the 30 MLB teams.

Even if the aforementioned players do not pan out, the Sox still boast a very strong roster. The outfield is made up of a formidable group featuring Jason “don’t call me Manny” Bay, Jacoby Elisbury, and JD Drew in right with Baldelli able to fill in at all 3 positions. Being with the team from the start of the season should boost Bay’s numbers, who still put up a respectable showing after having to fill some really big shoes down the stretch in ’08. The right side of the infield is solid with on-base machines Kevin Youkilis and reigning MVP Dustin Pedroia. The left side, on the other hand, is a bit of a question mark with third baseman Mike Lowell recovering from hip surgery and the shortstop position up for grabs in a battle between veteran Julio Lugo and 25-year old Jed Lowrie.

After a lot of uncertainty over contract details, the Sox were finally able to bring back the man with the C on his jersey to man the backstop. Reduced to a mediocre hitter at this point in his career, Jason Varitek is still crucial to the success of a pitching staff which is relying on some young but effective arms like phenom Jon Lester and even some key bullpen pieces such as Boston native Manny Delcarmen.

The starting rotation is as deep as they come, led by post-season hero Josh Beckett, Lester, and Dice-K, and rounded out by knuckleballer Tim Wakefield and newcomer Penny. Smoltz is expected back in May, which should push either Wakefield or Penny to an already solid pen. If injuries should hit, already experienced youngsters Clay Buckhholz and Justin Masterson are waiting in the wings as well as top prospect Michael Bowden. The fiery Johathan Papelbon may be the best 9th inning man in the league next to Mariano Rivera and he now has ex-Dodger Takashi Saito, a closer in his own right, to set him up.  If David Ortiz can bounce back to anything close to his 2007 form, Terry Francona’s squad should once again be playing meaningful October baseball. Look for Boston to finish with around 97 wins this season.

Orioles 2009 MLB Prediction

Baltimore Orioles 2009 Season Wins Prediction

Baltimore Orioles 2008 Record: 68-93, 28.5 GB in AL East

The O’s finally appear to be headed in the right direction after years of misguided acquisitions and poor draft choices. They are still a few years away from challenging in what should once again be baseball’s toughest division.

Game 2 NLCS Free Pick

Not Impressed with Phillies First win, Look to Next Game

I’m not impressed! Not with the Philadelphia Phillies (96-71 SU, 78-89 RL, 73-88-6 O/U) Game 1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers (87-79 SU, 84-82 RL, 75-85-6 O/U).

I’m actually not that impressed with my Game 1 selection that I predicted on Thursday as a blind man could have called Philadelphia’s Game 1 win with crafty lefty Cole Hamels on the mound.

Big Al’s Free Pick Of The Day – Cardinals vs. Astros

Big Al’s Free Pick Of The Day – Cardinals vs. Astros

St Louis Cardinals vs. Houston Astros (MLB) – Aug 30, 2008 7:05 PM EDT
Play: Money Line: -125 St Louis Cardinals Pick Title: BIG AL’s FREE SATURDAY SPORTS WINNER.

At 7:05pm our complimentary selection is on the St. Louis Cardinals over the Houston Astros. Veteran righthanded starter Braden Looper is a bit of a hard luck pitcher. Despite an excellent ERA of 3.94, and playing for a team that wins about 55% of the time, Looper has only won 12 of his 27 starts this season. Looper has had six quality starts in a row, but only three wins to show for it. Looper gets most of his wins on the road, where he is 7-3 with a 3.66 ERA this season, including a win against this Houston team in his second start of the year. Houston’s Brian Moehler has pitched well enough this year (9-5 with a 3.99 ERA in 20 starts) that the Astros decided to offer him a contract extension through the 2009 season. Despite his team showing faith in him in this way, Moehler has been less-than-spectacular lately, only throwing 5 1/3 innings in each of his last three starts while compiling a 1-1 record and 5.06 ERA along with a 1.62 WHIP. The Cards have dominated their division rivals this season, and even with their 3-2 loss on Friday, St. Louis is 10-5 in its last 15 games against the ‘Stros. Take the Cards. As always, good luck…Al McMordie.

Al McMordie has had a College Football game on this opening weekend CIRCLED FOR MONTHS, and it goes on Saturday. It’s Big Al’s #1 College Football Game of the Month, and it’s backed by 2 strong angles. If you need 1 BIG PLAY to make your Saturday, this MONSTER WINNER is it. Get on it.

Cleveland Indians vs. Texas Rangers Free MLB Pick – Friday

Friday Indians vs. Rangers Free MLB Pick

MLB | Aug 22
John Martin
Cleveland Indians vs. Texas Rangers

Martin’s Friday Free Play: 1 Unit on Texas Rangers -118 (Listing Harrison)

Matt Harrison has been a great addition to the Rangers staff with a 5-2 mark as a starter this season. Harrison is only getting better the more innings he throws, going 3-0 with a 3.72 ERA through his last three starts. Harrison and the Rangers are a solid bet as my free play at home today against Fausto Carmona and the Cleveland Indians. Carmona is 0-2 with a 6.75 ERA through his last three starts. Carmona has already faced the Rangers once this season, yielding 6 earned runs before getting relieved of his duties after 2 innings of work. Cleveland is 11-28 as a road underdog of +100 or higher this season. Texas is 61-30 in home games vs. an AL team with a batting average of .260 or worse in the second half of the season since 1997. Harrison over Carmona tonight.

Cash in with Texas as the favorite.

Jeff Alexander Braves vs. Mets Thursday Free MLB Pick

Jeff Alexander Braves vs. Mets Thursday Free MLB Pick

MLB | Aug 21

Jeff Alexander
Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Atlanta Braves +195 (listing Hampton and Martinez)

The Braves are overdue for a win and they have a great shot tonight. The Braves have actually won 7 of 11 against the Mets this season and will be looking to salvage a win in this series after dropping the first two. Atlanta is 44-17 against the money line in road games after 3 or more consecutive losses since 1997 and 103-57 against the money line in road games with double revenge – 2 straight losses against opponent since 1997. Hampton looked really good in his last start and I like him to out-duel Pedro tonight.

MLB |  Aug 20

Jeff Alexander

San Diego Padres vs. Arizona D-Backs

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Padres/D-backs UNDER 7 Runs (listing Haren and Peavy)
Not surprisingly, the Under is 7-0-1 in Peavy’s last 8 starts overall, 4-0-1 in Peavy’s last 5 road starts, 5-1-1 in Peavy’s last 7 starts vs. the National League West, and 20-7-2 in Peavy’s last 29 starts when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game. The Under is a strong 7-3 in the Diamondbacks last 10 games following a win and 8-3 in Haren’s last 11 starts when their opponent allows 5 runs or more in their previous game.

We’ll take the under in this pitcher’s duel tonight.

Florida Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants Free MLB Pick | Baseball Prediction

Marlins vs. Giants Free MLB Pick

MLB | Aug 19
John Martin Picks
Florida Marlins vs. San Francisco Giants

1 Unit on Florida Marlins -135 (Listing Nolasco and Correia)

Florida will kick it in gear in this series with the lowly San Francisco Giants. The Marlins are coming off a couple tough series against the Cardinals and Cubs, but they catch a break getting the terrible Giants when they are in desperate need of wins as we near the end of the season. Ricky Nolasco has been the Marlins’ most consistent starter, posting an 11-7 record and 3.88 ERA on the season. Kevin Correia has faced the Marlins twice in his career, going 0-1 with a 12.97 ERA.

Free MLB Pick – Indians vs. Blue Jays

MLB | Aug 10
Cleveland Indians vs. Toronto Blue Jays

1 Unit FREE PLAY on Cleveland Indians -135 (listing Lee) Cleveland goes for the road sweep today behind the 15-2 Cliff Lee and I like them to get it. The Indians are a dominant 22-7 in the last 29 meetings in this series, 10-3 in Lee’s last 13 road starts, 4-0 in Lee’s last 4 starts with 5 days of rest, and 23-9 in Lee’s last 32 starts after allowing 2 runs or less in their previous game. The Blue Jays won’t be able to hold down the Tribe behind inexperienced starter Scott Richmond.
