Vanderbilt has had the privilege of getting each of its first three games in Nashville, but they haven’t exactly done the most with those contests. In their first year without James Franklin, the team has looked like a shell of its former self.

[dfads params=’groups=63738&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

The Commodores have done a real number on bettors this season, going 0-3 against the number, with a 72-point combined discrepancy in those three games. The team seemed to be in good shape with Derek Mason coming in to replace Franklin, but it doesn’t seem that way now.

The team was lit up by not only Ole Miss, but Temple as well. In fact, the Commodores trailed the Rebels as much as 41-0 in that contest. Even in their victory they didn’t look impressive, trailing UMass by as many as 11 points in the fourth quarter – and, again, that was at home.

[dfads params=’groups=66501&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Mason has employed a scheme change on defense and the boys just have not taken well to it. The offense hasn’t handled the change on that side of the ball well either, and the rotating of quarterbacks hasn’t helped get any stability on that side of the ball.

The Commodore offense has seen both Patton Robinette and Stephen Rivers struggle at the position. Vanderbilt has all of five touchdowns on the season, and the offense has only produced two of them, meaning they’ve been outscored by their own defense and special teams.

As for South Carolina, they’re coming off a big win, but don’t expect them to get hit by the letdown spot.

[dfads params=’groups=63739&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]

Steve Spurrier expressed his frustration with the defense a week ago, so the players on that side certainly have something to prove here, while the offense has a lot to work on as well.

FREE Vanderbilt vs. South Carolina ATS Pick:

Vanderbilt is really in a bad way right now, and they’re taking a major step up in class in this one. We’ve already seen the kind of trouble they’re in for when they take on elite SEC foes when they faced off against Ole Miss. Now they get a South Carolina team that is looking to build a big margin after a couple of close victories. That spells big trouble for the Commodores.

South Carolina is 4-0 ATS in their last four games following a straight up win, while Vanderbilt is 0-4 ATS in its last four home games.

The under is 5-1-1 in the last seven meetings between these teams, and it is 4-1 in the Gamecocks’ last five games following an ATS victory.

4* FREE ATS play: South Carolina -22.5, under 54.5

It’s Thanksgiving week, which means the middle of the NFL campaign while winding down the college football regular season.

Late season college football means heated races for conference titles and bowl berths, plus rivalries that span decades. These games can have far more importance for players than September/October clashes. Oklahoma/Ok-State, USC/UCLA, Florida/Florida State, Georgia/Georgia Tech and Auburn/Alabama bring out extra intensity and emotion.

It may be HOT and many folks are still on vacation, but August kicks off the best time of the sports betting calendar: Football season! Competition on the field won’t be as intense as September, of course, as wins aren’t as important as evaluating young talent and trying to keep players healthy. However, there will be betting lines available on preseason pro action and it’s possible to cash winning tickets.

With the Super Bowl in the rear view mirror, the next big event on the sports stage is college basketball’s season-ending tournaments.

Since 1997, college basketball’s national champion has come from several different conferences: the Pac 10 (Arizona), SEC (Kentucky and Florida), Big 10 (Michigan State), the ACC (Duke, Maryland, North Carolina), Nig 12 (Kansas) and the Big East (UConn, Syracuse).

Super Sunday!

The top two seeds in both conferences have made it to the Super Bowl. That’s not the norm, as it hasn’t happened since 1993. The Colts are looking for their second Super Bowl title in four seasons while the Saints make their first trip to the big game. For those examining expert football picks, back in August the Colts were 8-to-1 to win the Super Bowl while the Saints were 18-to-1.

As the playoffs begin, those who earned the top two seeds in each conference have a key edge, as they get a bye the first week while watching the others duke it out. Sitting at home this past weekend were the Saints, Vikings, Colts and Chargers. A year ago the favorites to win the 2010 Super Bowl were the Patriots at 6-to-1, the Steelers at 7-to-1, the Colts at 8-to-1 and the NY Giants at 8-to-1.

Looking at NFL streaks, two things stand out in 2009: The Saints and Colts. It was quite a story two years ago when the Patriots were trying to march through the NFL regular season at 16-0 as it hadn’t happened in 35 years. Now, just two years later, a pair of teams are threatening to do it!

The Overlooked Edge: Football Depth

Jim Feist

Depth is such an essential element of success in pro and college football, and one that is easily overlooked. Big college programs have this as a huge advantage over small schools. Because of injuries, Oregon had to use backup QB Nate Cost in the middle of the season, and he played well in a win over UCLA.
