No one will contest that both the Colts and the Saints are adept at dumping points on the scoreboard. Peyton Manning and Drew Brees – quite possibly the two best field generals in football – lead ultra-dangerous offenses onto the field in Miami. While the Saints might have the edge in explosiveness, Indianapolis in unmatched in terms of efficiently dissecting opposing defenses. No cheesy college-style spread offenses here: just unmatched preparation and timing with several difference-makers wearing both uniforms. And we wonder why the Super bowl spread is what it is.

The spread for Super Bowl XLIV currently sits at Colts -5.5; if Manning has the game everyone expects him to have and hobbled DE Dwight Freeney can have any effectiveness getting to Brees, there are reasons for confidence in such a figure. With a torn ligament in his ankle, there’s concern about how much pass-rush specialist Freeney will be able to contribute. [soliloquy id=”82219″] Though Indy still has fellow DE Robert Mathis creating pass-rush havoc on the other side, the scheme is most effective when both Freeney and Mathis are doing their job.

New Orleans has an underrated offensive line and it should be able to gouge Indy on the ground with the RB tandem of Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. Moving the chains and taking what the Colts’ zone defense allows will be a key to the Saints pulling an upset. If N’awlins is going to go deep, it should victimize CB Kelvin Hayden, who is at a disadvantage when he’s forced to turn his hips and run with speedier receivers.

However, if the Colts execute like they’ve proven they can and with so many passing targets to worry about (when Jets CB Darrelle Revis shut down WR Reggie Wayne a couple weeks ago, Manning simply went to other young stars Pierre Garcon and Austin Collie) there should be a second Super Bowl ring on the league MVP’s finger by the end of the weekend. Be smart, pick the Colts to cover the Super Bowl spread.
