Before the season, the New Orleans Saints had odds of 20/1 on winning the Super Bowl. Going into this weekend, they sit a mere one game away. Unfortunately, the best quarterback in a generation stands in the way of the Saints and the hallowed crown.

If one were to make a confident assertion, it would be that Super Bowl odds are, we won’t see a shutout on Sunday. Two well-oiled offenses take the field in Miami, along with two defensive units that have had their moments giving up yards and points. This year was a zany year for passing in the NFL, with practically every pivot finishing with over 3,000 yards and several QBs racking up over 4,000 yards passing. It’s likely that viewers will see a culmination of that trend in Super Bowl XLIV.
The Colts and the Saints like to go downfield early and often; the Saints with a love for the deep ball and Indianapolis more liable to spread the ball around systematically. Both teams also have defenses that can capitalize on errors, but there the challenge is forcing an error out of Peyton Manning or Drew Brees, maybe the two elite field generals in the game.

If the contest came down to something so minute as the kicking game, I like the Colts with an advantage – tested veteran Matt Stover over young buck Garrett Hartley (though Hartley nailed a huge field goal for the overtime win versus Minnesota two weeks ago).
This game could very well end up 41-35 for someone; the intriguing question is: what are the odds, at this point, the New Orleans Saints continue to exceed expectations?

Most people are on the Colts in this one as the Peyton Manning factor seems to be a bit much for the Saints to overcome. While I’m not taking the Saints straight up, I am taking them with the +5. Drew Brees is the second best quarterback in the league and will have a few tricks up his sleeve as well.
