2010 Super Bowl Lines – Saints vs. Colts

SUPER BOWL XLIV
Sunday, February 7, 6:25 p.m. ET
Opening Super Bowl Line: Colts -4
Current Super Bowl Line: Colts -5

Super Bowl weekend will surely mean longer lines for the swanky clubs in South Florida, though if there’s a group of people we should hope won’t be patrons at any Miami establishments; it’s the teams’ respective offensive lines. Their performance will truly dictate the outcome of Sunday’s game – especially because both offenses are structured around a precision passing game.

The Super Bowl lines for the upcoming game sit at Indianapolis -5.5 and the over/under super bowl lines are set at 56.5; the halftime super bowl lines are set at Indy -3, and the over/under for halftime is 28.5.

My faith in the current odds rests in the fact that Colts pivot Peyton Manning tends to have time in the pocket to execute. Though Manning and Saints QB Drew Brees aren’t adept scramblers per se, they are both skilled at extending their time in the pocket with fleet footwork. However, pass rushers on both sidelines will be instructed to pin their ears back in this contest. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Indy has the pass-rushing edge with the dynamic duo of Dwight Freeney and Robert Mathis (though Freeney will be hobbled with a bad ankle). New Orleans has a fantastic interior to its offensive line, but tackles Jermon Bushrod and Jon Stinchcomb will be put to a test. With the Colts O-line, tackles Charlie Johnson and veteran Ryan Lilja aren’t world-beaters, but they perform capably enough to make Manning a seldom-sacked target.

A question mark could be the performance of Saints ends Will Smith and Bobby McCray. Smith is a talented, if not elite, end and McCray is a borderline starter. Smith does possess the talent, however, to wake up and take over a game. If ‘Big Willie Styles’ has a career performance, that might be the shift of momentum the Saints need to take an edge. The Saints’ D has other playmakers who can capitalize on mistakes, but it all stems from Manning being pressured into making those mistakes.
