2009 Superbowl XLIII Betting Odds

Super Bowl XLIII Odds – Handicapping the total

Now that the Arizona Cardinals and Pittsburgh Steelers have won the NFC and AFC respectively, it falls onto sports betting fans to figure out which of the myriad wagers associated with the Super Bowl will make online betting profits.

What this means is that NFL betting fans can’t handicap the Super Bowl like any other NFL game. It’s important to pick apart each online wager that the BetUS Sportsbook offers in order to try and gauge exactly which wagers will lead to profits and which wagers will burn up online betting bank rolls.

Furthermore, each Super Bowl online bet is related to another Super Bowl online bet. Yes, I know that’s obvious but being able to analyze one online bet and glean information for another online bet is where the true skill in sports handicapping lies.

Let’s take a look at the BetUS Total for both teams in this game and see if the number will reveal anything to us.

BetUS Line for the Super Bowl
Point Total:
47 points

Analysis: It’s too early to tell which way the number is going to go. Unlike the online betting spread between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Arizona Cardinals, which has already moved a half point in a single day, the BetUS Total, currently at 47 points, hasn’t moved at all.

The reason is because online football betting fans don’t have a strong opinion that this game will go over or under. Why? Well, that’s the question, isn’t it?

Let’s analyze this for a moment. Looking at the Arizona Cardinals it is easy for online sportsbook betting fans to see that they have scored over 30 points in three straight games. Super Bowl BettingThe teams they have racked up the points against were the Philadelphia Eagles last week, the Carolina Panthers two weeks ago, and the Atlanta Falcons three weeks ago. By scoring so many points, the Arizona Cardinals have proven that they can move the ball and that they can get it into the end zone.

But then why is the BetUS Total so low? It’s not like the Pittsburgh Steelers can’t score. The Steelers scored 23 against the Baltimore Ravens after pouring it on against the San Diego Chargers. The Steelers too can put the ball into the end zone. They can even score on special teams with Santonio Holmes running back kicks and on defense with Troy Polamalu intercepting the ball and running it back for a touchdown.

So, the Steelers are more than capable of scoring as well but the BetUS online sportsbook odds makers have listed the otal at 47 points.

I can think of only one explanation. In reality, if the oddsmakers felt that the Cardinals could score 30 points, then the total would be listed at roughly 49 to 52 points. Both the Cardinals and Steelers should be able to put up close to 30 points on even terms, right?

To me, it should change in relation to the online against the spread odds. If the Steelers become bigger favorites against the spread, then I expect the total to go down. If the majority of sports bettors lean towards the Cardinals, then I expect it to go up.

Next week the oddsmakers have a better idea of where the money is going and so will the bettors. When the odds change you will know where the majority of the money is going, and this can help you make an educated decision. I see this game covering 50 points regardless of which team wins and if the betting public agrees, then that total will rise and you may not be able to get this number next week.
