TOP CONTENDERS

Green Bay Packers (+600)

Would’ve been nice if they’d filled their only possible hole with a Mark Ingram pick but the Saints beat them to the punch. Still, the defending champs still look like arguably the most talent-rich team in the NFL. Aaron Rodgers is already the highest-rated passer in NFL history and could still get better. B.J. Raji and Tramon Williams stepped up to join Clay Matthews as emerging young defensive studs last season. The Pack will be back in a big way – and they were smart to grab an offensive lineman in round one with Chad Clifton getting long in the tooth.

New England Patriots (+600)

I have to say – I was pretty disappointed that the Pats didn’t work hard to land one of the top receiver prospects in the draft. Still, they shored up their O-line with Nate Solder and the Ryan Mallett pick at least prevented some division rivals (Miami, Buffalo) from improving at the quarterback position. With Tom Brady far from finished after possibly his best season yet and an emerging young defense, New England could push the Pack hard. Wonder if they’ll try to land Terrell Owens or Chad Ochocinco?

STOCK RISING

Atlanta Falcons (+1200)

Did the Falcons really need to trade up for coveted receiver Julio Jones? To boost an offense that already featured Matt Ryan, Roddy White, Tony Gonzalez and Michael Turner? Not necessarily. But their bold move on draft day made a statement: we’re going for it. Adding Jacquizz Rodgers to be a home-run hitter in the backfield made sense, too.

New York Giants (+1500)

Eli Manning has established himself as a solid second-tier quarterback and he has a good young receiving corps at his disposal. Ahmad Bradshaw wasn’t perfect last year but he showed he can handle a starting running back load. The Giants’ defense need a jolt and they landed two first-round-caliber talents in Prince Amukamara and the underrated Marvin Austin. Both guys could be impact rookies. Great draft for the Giants.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3000)

The Bucs were ahead of schedule last season with Josh Freeman plus the young defense breaking out. They should only get better and they added a pair of intriguing defensive line talents in Adrian Clayborn and the boom-bust Da’Quan Bowers.

Detroit Lions (+3000)

We still don’t know for sure if Matthew Stafford is the man but the Lions’ defense should grow more ferocious by the game now that first-rounder Nick Fairley will join Ndamukong Suh on the line. If shifty Titus Young out of Boise State emerges as an effective slot receiver quickly, could Calvin Johnson have his best season yet?

STOCK FALLING

New York Jets (+1200)

The Jets were smart to take defensive lineman with their first two picks but doing so also highlighted a concern for 2011: half their team is set to bolt for free agency. The oddsmakers have bumped Gang Green almost out of the top 10 amid the roster uncertainty.

Indianapolis Colts (+1500)

The Colts’ odds of +1500 aren’t bad by any means but we’re used to seeing Indy ranked among the top two or three contenders every year, so this feels weird. Peyton Manning is aging and starting to make bad decisions here and there and no one has confidence in Indy’s running attack or run defense.

Houston Texans (+4000)

I get it. The Texans are shifting to a 3-4, so they needed to add specific types of players for that scheme, like J.J. Watt and Brooks Reed. But they already have Brian Cushing and Mario Williams, who is converting to outside linebacker. Hello, Houston? YOU HAVE NO SECONDARY. YOU PASSED ON PRINCE AMUKAMARA.

It’s just unforgivable for a team that struggled against the pass like no other last season. Oddsmakers are losing faith in the Texans.
