NCAAF: BALL STATE LOOKS TO STAY UNBEATEN

The Ball State Cardinals are one of the only unbeaten teams left in college football as they host the Northern Illinois Huskies tonight.

Sportsbook.com has Ball State as 9 ½-point favorites with a Total of 47. ESPN2 will broadcast at 8 pm ET in what should be a challenging game.

Northern Illinois (5-3, 5-2 ATS) ranks 7th in the country in total defense, allowing 266 yards per game, and 9th in scoring defense at 13.6 PPG. Their offense is below average and they are primarily a running team. They rush for 185 yards a game against opponents who have allowed 184 YPG and throw for 156 yards per game, which is 104th in the country.

NIU’s losses have all come on the road, two to BCS teams Minnesota and Tennessee, by a grand total of 11 points and they have covered the spread in each of those. They defeated Bowling Green in their last game and are 6-1 ATS off a home win.

Ball State (8-0, 5-1-1 ATS) is a very good offensive team, averaging 37.5 PPG, led by quarterback, Nate Davis. Wednesday Night FootballThe junior signal caller is already Ball State’s career passing leader with 7,700 yards and 63 touchdowns. This season, he’s completing 66.7% of his passes and has thrown for 2,058 yards and 15 touchdowns.

However, he’s not the only weapon on this multifaceted Cardinals attack, with running back MiQuale Lewis ranking seventh in the nation with 123.6 yards per game. Famous alum David Letterman might even watch as his old university has been a money-maker the last few years with a 20-9 ATS record.

The Ball State defense has become stingier, surrendering just 23 points in their last three games and they have been nearly as good as NIU in conference play. The Cardinals are 10-3 ATS off a home game.

It would be far from shocking if this game went Under the total. Northern Illinois is down to its third string quarterback in Chandler Harnish, who is a good athlete and decent runner. He and fellow freshman Me’co Brown help the Huskies keep the clock rolling, maintaining possession of the ball for nearly 33 minutes a game.

NIU is 14-4 Under in all games over the last two seasons, including 9-1 UNDER after allowing 125 or less rushing yards in two straight contests.

Northern Illinois is 6-2 ATS versus ranked teams since 2002 and the visitor is 6-2 and 5-3 ATS in this series. Ball State has won 13 of 18 games and covered a strong percentage of the time at 12-5-1 ATS, a 70.5% clip.
