NCAAF: MAC CONFERENCE IN THE SPOTLIGHT

College Football comes to Tuesday night as the Miami of Ohio Redhawks and Buffalo Bulls collide in an important MAC East contest.  Sportsbook.com has Buffalo as 8½-point favorites with a Total of 51.5. ESPN2 will have this matchup starting at 7:30 pm ET.

Buffalo’s situation is more promising as they are one of two teams in the inferior East Division that has just two losses and actually controls their own destiny as long as they keep winning.

Miami of Ohio’s path is more muddled, having already lost three times in conference, and they could take the next step in adding to the confusion with an upset tonight.

This was supposed to be the breakout year for the Bulls (4-4, 5-3 ATS) under coach Turner Gill with 18 returning starters. However, Buffalo suffered narrow losses to Central and Western Michigan, which has undermined their season record. They could still be very successful overall by capturing a division crown for the first time in their history.

The running game has been a disappointment ranking 10th in the conference at 114.7 yards per game. With running back James Starks in an out of the lineup, Buffalo has not been able to sustain anything on the ground.

Starks was back in their last outing and the Bulls rushed for a season-high 277 yards. They were 1 ½-point underdogs at Ohio and won 32-19, but are just 1-4 ATS at home off a straight up underdog win.
Miami of Ohio (2-6, 3-4 ATS) was far too gracious a host last time out, giving away the ball six times to Kent State in a 54-21 drubbing. Those six turnovers led directly to Kent State points and left Miami with a turnover margin of -8, worst in the MAC and 106th nationally.

Tuesday Night FootballThe Redhawks were almost defenseless in stopping the MAC’s best rushing attack, allowing 305 yards. “It was a very embarrassing loss to Kent State. We were coming off our most complete game of the year and feeling good about where we were going,” noted Miami head coach Shane Montgomery.
Miami-O is in a tough position to find answers, being next to last in total offense in the conference and having scored the fewest touchdowns in the MAC at 16. Defensively, they are sufficient by league standards ranking third in total defense, but as a team are 0-7 ATS after playing a gamewhere 60 total points or more were scored over the last three seasons.

Buffalo needs another good performance from Starks and quarterback Drew Willy to cover the spread. The offense has done a good job in protecting the ball, not having committed more than two turnovers in any game and just two in the last 16 quarters. Unfortunately, they are 0-7 ATS at home after two consecutive games with a turnover margin of +1 or better.

Buffalo is 8-1 ATS after one or more straight up win and both schools have a magic number that matters to those wagering. The Bulls average 27.6 points per game on the season and 31.7 at University of Buffalo Stadium. They are 18-4 ATS when they score 28 or more points. Coincidently, Miami surrenders 30.1 PPG this season and is 1-9 ATS when they allow 28 or more points.

Buffalo is 0-10 lifetime against Miami (5-4 ATS), with this marking the first time they have ever been favored against them.
