NFL: BETTORS SHUN MCNABB, EAGLES

Bettors want no part of Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb after benching last weekend in Baltimore.

McNabb’s Philadelphia Eagles are giving three-points for Thanksgiving’s home game against the Arizona Cardinals but only 25% of bettors are backing them. The Over/Under is 47 points and a whopping 93% of the public thinks it will be a high-scoring affair going Over.

McNabb’s benching after the first half in Baltimore was shocking even though he had thrown for only 59 yards and had two interceptions. That was after a bad game the week before in Cincinnati when he had three interceptions.

The shocking part was that the Eagles were only down 10-7 when they made the switch and they inserted Kevin Kolb who had only thrown nine passes in his entire two year career.

Kolb predictably struggled against the ferocious Baltimore defense and the Eagles got outscored 26-0 in the second half.

McNabb hasn’t ripped the organization publicly since his benching but you can be sure he isn’t too pleased. Kolb was drafted as the quarterback of the future in 2007 and the handwriting for McNabb is on the wall if they don’t make the playoffs, a very likely scenario.

McNabb would love to make a big statement in this game, but the pressure will be on him from his own fans as they will likely boo every time he has an incomplete pass. Remember, these Philly fans may be the toughest in the league and even Santa Claus doesn’t go into Lincoln Financial Field without security.

The Philly effort is made even harder with running back Brian Westbrook playing though injury and guard Shawn Andrews out. There is also the question of the mental psyche of the team as they are a long shot for the playoffs now and are having to answer the media’s questions about the quarterback controversy.

The Arizona Cardinals are also coming off a loss, but it can be excused somewhat as it came against a very good New York Giants team.

The Cardinals are in control of the NFC West, mostly because the rest of the division stinks, but partly because this is a much improved team.

The offense is ranked #2 in the NFL thanks mostly to Kurt Warner and the passing attack. The defense is ranked #10 in total yards allowed although good offenses can still move the ball on them.

The Cardinals have also played much better on the road of late with wins over lowly St. Louis and Seattle and almost beating a very good home team in Carolina.

The one thing that the 75% of Arizona backers have to fear is turnovers by Warner. When he avoids interceptions and fumbles, they are very hard to beat, and that will be the case once again on Thursday night.
