NCAAF: UPSET COMING IN THE WAC?

The Boise State Broncos could make a return to a BCS Bowl game if they stay unbeaten, but the San Jose St. Spartans are standing in their way tonight.

Sportsbook.com and other oddsmakers respect San Jose St, installing them as just a touchdown underdog with a Total of 41.5. ESPN2 will broadcast starting at 9 pm ET.

This is a different Broncos team, not fully immersed in just scoring points. Boise State is still scoring enough to average 32.5 PPG, just not the over 40 points an outing we were accustomed to seeing.

The real strength of the 2008 Broncos is a defense that keeps the opposition from scoring. They are second in the country (only to USC) in points allowed at 10.5 per game.

Coach Chris Peterson has a first year quarterback in Kellen Moore and had to replace a number of other players on offense. He’s been able to lean on a defense that has racked up 16 turnovers, sacked the quarterback 20 times and made 11 fourth-down stops. In Boise State’s last three games, they have allowed just 17 points, none in the second half.

Boise State (6-0, 3-2 ATS) is playing four of their next five on the road which will settle if they win the WAC, and go to a BCS Bowl. The first stop might be the toughest at San Jose State.

This is the third straight season Boise State is in the Top 25 and unbeaten headed to San Jose. In 2004, the Broncos blocked a field goal at the end of regulation and went on to defeat the Spartans 56-49 in overtime as 32½-point favorites.

Two seasons ago they erased an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter with a touchdown and two-point conversion and kicked a game-winning field goal in the closing seconds to escape 23-20. Both years the Broncos finished undefeaten.

San Jose State is 5-2 and 5-1 against the spread this season, again playing with the toughness veteran coach Dick Tomey demands. The Spartans have been in every game except Nebraska and even then they out-gained the Huskers by 38 yards.

Boise State allows fewer points than San Jose State, but the Spartans are number one in total defense in the WAC and are ranked 13th nationally at 272.6 yards per game allowed. They are also 9-1 ATS in home WAC affairs the last three years.

Boise State is a virtual money-making machine with a 30-11 ATS record after five or more straight up wins. The Broncos are 8-0, and but only 3-4 ATS versus the Spartans.

It would appear this should go Under the Total. The Broncos are 10-2 Under off a home win by 17 points or more and the Spartans are 10-0 Under after allowing 14 points or less in their last game.
