NBA Playoffs Ready For Tip-Off

The series are set, the NBA playoff odds are up on the betting board, the betting public is having their say and the teams are getting ready to make their runs at the Championship.

As it stands, the Los Angeles Lakers are big -400 favorites to take the Western Conference and ditto for the Cleveland Cavaliers who are -300 to do the same in the East.

Likewise, the Lakers are the odds-on favorites to win the NBA championship at +125 followed closely by those same Cavs at +160.

What about the defending champion Boston Celtics?

While Boston is still one of the favorites to win the Eastern Conference and take the NBA title (at +250 and +500 respectively), they were dealt a blow when it was announced that there was a possibility Kevin Garnett could miss the entire postseason with a knee injury.

It wasn’t only the Celtics who were dealt a blow; future bettors who’ve been putting money on Boston since the off-season took a big kick as well.

Needless to say most online sportsbooks saw a significant drop-off in Celtic future action once the Garnett news came out.

They definitely won’t have their star forward in the lineup when they open their playoff campaign against the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, but despite the missing piece, Boston is still a big favorite to win this series. SPORTSBETTING.com saw action on the series betting level off somewhat, while the Game 1 betting action now favors Boston by 57%. They are currently listed as 8.5-point home faves and the Total is set at 196.

The Celtics have had the Bulls number as of late, putting together an impressive 7-1 ATS mark the last eight times they have faced Chicago, including a 4-0 ATS record in their last four home games vs. the Bulls.

Also worth noting for bettors is that in their last six games traveling to Chicago, the Celtics are 7-13 ATS in the last 20, and looking at the Total, these two have a record of 1 over, 4 unders and 1 push in their last six in Chicago.

Boston finished the season in first place in the Atlantic division while Chicago was second in the Central and against Central teams, the Celtics are again unprofitable going 8-12 ATS in their last 20 against teams from that division.

 – What about the Lakers?

As opposed to last year’s champs, the Lakers are looking healthy.

Center Andrew Bynum was injured for the second part of the season but has returned and in four games since returning has averaged 17.3 points, 5.5 boards and 1 block a game.

The Lakers will begin the playoffs with a series against the Utah Jazz, with lopsided odds set on this one. The crew from Salt Lake City are a massive +1200 underdog.

In the last 20 games between the two, the Lakers hold the edge going 11-7-2 ATS, and more recently are 9-4-1 ATS in the last 14.

There are some interesting numbers of note when looking at the Total: The “Over” has been prominent, as these two have combined for six straight “Overs” in their last six meetings. Overall, the record is 14 overs and 6 unders in their last 20 matchups.

The Jazz will open the playoffs at the STAPLES Center on Sunday and again the odds will be stacked against them as they are listed as 11-point road ‘dogs vs. the Lakers and the Total is set at 210.

Another nice “Over” trend in this one is that the last seven times the Jazz have been an underdog of more than 8-points, they have produced a mark of 5 overs, 1 under and 1 push.
