Tom Freese Remembers “The Spectrum”

Growing up in Philadelphia I saw many great games in the Spectrum in South Philly…

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST

Growing up in Philadelphia I saw many great games in the Spectrum in South Philly. Keep in mind that I am not your typical Philadelphia fan in fact I’m hated in these parts because I root for all of sports teams in Boston. From a sports point of view May 19, 1974 was the worst sports day of my life.

That is the day that the Philadelphia Flyers beat the Boston Bruins 1-0 to win their first ever Stanley Cup. I was nineteen years old and within minutes there was 30 cars honking their horns in front of my house. My sports hero is Bobby Orr. For my money he is the best player the ever laced on the skates. Orr and I have something in common. He had 9 knee surgeries while playing for the Bruins while I had 6 knee surgeries.

In fact while I was in a hospital bed waiting to have surgery on my left knee 1971 I was watching the Bruins lose to Montreal in Game seven that sent the Canadiens to the Stanley Cup. Three days later I got a letter from Bobby Orr apologizing that the Bruins did not win the Stanley Cup and promised me that they would win it next year and they did. Back to the wonderful Spectrum. I was at the Final 4 in 1976 when Indiana beat Michigan to win the National Championship.

I saw a NBA ALL-STAR Game there as well. Of course I saw many Celtic and Bruins games there as well. There wasn’t a bad seat in the house.

May she rest in peace.
