Pats make Tom Brady NFL’s richest player

Some NFLers got locked up for serious long-term money yesterday – and the timing couldn’t be better for a certain car-crash survivor.

NFL news: Pats make Tom Brady NFL’s richest player; Packers extend Charles Woodson; Percy Harvin’s heart stopped

Thursday started tumultuously for Tom Brady but ended in style. After he survived a major car accident, he finally signed an extension with the New England Patriots. Brady signed a four-year deal that will pay him $18.5 million per season, making him football’s highest-paid player. The deal includes $48.5 million in guaranteed money.

The Packers locked up a valuable piece of their puzzle yesterday, too. They signed cornerback Charles Woodson, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, to an extension through 2014 that could be worth up to $55 million, including $20 million in advances and roughly $33.5 million over the first three seasons of the deal.

It was nice to see Percy Harvin starting at receiver for the Vikings yesterday just a couple weeks after he collapsed during practice. How severe was his episode at the time? We now know that Harvin’s heart actually stopped beating. The good news is that doctors know the cause – sleep apnea – and are confident that they can eliminate his migraines by fitting him with a special breathing machine while he sleeps.

Happy Trails, Kevin Mawae. The 16-year NFL vet and eight-time Pro-Bowl center, has announced his retirement at age 40. At least he’ll stay busy; he’s president of the NFL Players Association.

MLB news: Toronto police recover Roger Clemens documents; Rockies steal home in victory

The crusade against Roger Clemens continues as his perjury trial approaches. Yesterday, Toronto Police searched the Toronto Blues’ offices and found documents in connection with Clemens’ case. Clemens pitched for the Blue Jays in 1997 and 1998, winning 41 games and two Cy Young Awards over those two seasons. Police haven’t revealed what was in the documents.

What is it with the Colorado Rockies going crazy in September every single season? They’ve won seven in a row and really amped up the drama against Cincinnati last night. They fell behind 5-0 in the second inning and roared back to tie the game. Then, in the eighth inning, Chris Nelson caught pitcher Nick Masset napping. He noticed that Masset was looking at the ground, not paying him much attention, so he took off and scored the winning run. He became the first player since Dan Uggla in 2006 to take home for his first career steal.

NBA news: Ron Artest puts his championship ring up for auction

The headline is misleading. It’s natural to assume Artest just pulled another crazy, quirky stunt. While he has done that, the motivations behind it are pretty darned cool. Artest will receive his NBA Championship ring on October 26 but says he’s “never going to put it on.” He immediately plans to auction it off to raise money for charity. He hopes to get a worldwide auction going with some major bids before donating the earnings to help bring more psychiatrists, therapists and psychologists into schools.
