Neither team has lived up to its lofty expectations, and neither team will be competing for a Pac-12 championship this season. All that said, we’ve got a rivalry game on our hands that features two in-state teams that want nothing more than to beat one another.

The luster may be gone, but fans shouldn’t tune out just yet.

Oregon State

The Beavers have defined the term “ups and downs” this season. They started the year by inexplicably dropping the opener to FCS Eastern Washington, but they turned it around by winning six straight.

Unfortunately, they dropped their next five, which is the streak they enter this contest with in Week 14.

As poorly as Oregon State has played, it is still a dangerous team throwing the ball. Sean Mannion and Brandin Cooks are still a dynamic pass-catch duo, and the team is still third in passing yards as a result.

Unfortunately for Oregon State, it’s the ground game that has caused the Ducks to fall off their pedestal this season.

Arizona and Stanford both pounded the ball down the throats of Oregon’s defense, and that’s something Oregon State can’t do at this point in the process.

The Beavers are just 120th in the nation in rushing yards per game. They tally a measly 72.8 yards per game, which means their passing game needs to be as crisp as it’s ever been to keep up with Oregon’s high-octane offense.

Oregon

The Ducks haven’t looked like themselves late in the season, and there are a number of reasons why.

Head coach Mark Helfrich hasn’t been able to adjust the way Chip Kelly once did. Marcus Mariota has been banged up. Maybe most importantly, De’Anthony Thomas and Josh Huff appeared to be in the wrong mindset when they stated that the Rose Bowl was no big deal.

If the Ducks come in with the right mindset—the one that says a rivalry game means the world to any true competitor—they shouldn’t have too much trouble with the Beavers.

Oregon State’s defense is just 95th in the country, and quite frankly, Oregon should have little trouble putting up points.

Just as importantly, Oregon must remain disciplined. Penalties have killed them all season, but it’s the recent string of turnovers that has put them in unrecoverable situations.

If the Ducks take care of the football and recognize that a two-loss season isn’t worth crying over, they’ll be in good shape.

Prediction: Oregon 54 – Oregon State 23
