As we check in with the daily news, there’s chatter in the sports world about multiple stars riding off into the sunset. Brett Favre…Manny Pacquiao…Vince Young?

Boxing news: Manny Pacquiao “can’t see himself boxing past age 35”

Manny Pacquiao may only have a few years left atop the boxing world. I suppose it makes sense since he’s also a politician and a crooner. He recently said that he plans to retire in three years and doesn’t see himself fighting past the age of 35. Floyd Mayweather Jr. better get his act together soon.

NFL news: Vince Young done in Tennessee?

As He Played His Last Game In Tennessee?

Yesterday couldn’t have gone much worse for Vince Young and the Tennessee Titans. An ineffective Young injured his thumb on his throwing hand during Tennessee’s 19-16 overtime loss to Washington and was replaced by rookie Rusty Smith. Young tried to get his thumb re-taped in an effort to return but coach Jeff Fisher decided to stick with Smith anyway.

After the game, Young hurled his jersey and pads into the stands. He had a heated discussion with Fisher in the locker room. Young later tweeted that he was fine and that he “just [wants] to play” but Fisher seemed to view the incident more seriously. He said that Young “threw half his uniform in the stands.

I think clearly that is no way to respond, and so we have some things that we have to sort out with him.” Young may have also torn the flexor tendon in his right thumb and may require season-ending surgery.

Week 11 saw the usual smattering of injuries on top of Young’s. Among the most notable: Austin Collie aggravating his concussion symptoms and Ellis Hobbs suffering a scary neck injury from which he eventually walked away under his own power.

MLB news: Mets name Terry Collins manager

The New York Mets’ search for a new manager is finally over. They’ve hired Terry Collins, who will be the 12th new manager in the majors since opening day of 2010.

The 61-year-old Collins, who was the Mets’ minor-league field co-ordinator this past season, managed the Houston Astros from 1994 to 1996 and the “Anaheim” Angels from 1997 to 1999. He compiled a 444-434 record.

NBA news: Peja Stojakovic joins Raptors in five-player deal; Injuries pile up for Heat

In case you didn’t hear about it late last week, the Toronto Raptors and New Orleans Hornets were plenty busy.

Toronto sent guards Jarret Jack and Marcus Banks plus center David Anderson to New Orleans for guard Jerryd Bayless and swingman Peja Stojakovic. Jack averaged 11.4 points last year for the Raps.

Bayless, a 22-year-old out of Arizona, was a former first-round pick that never really got off the ground. The Raptors still hope he can blossom. Stojakovic’s All-Star days are clearly behind him but he has an expiring contract.

Toronto now has roughly $25 million in expiring deals.

In Miami, the Big Three’s supporting cast, if you can call it that, is dwindling. Udonis Haslem averaged eight points and eight-plus boards in 13 games so far this season and will be lost until at least February with a torn ligament in his left foot.

NCAA football news: Did Taylor Martinez quit Nebraska?

After a bizarre 9-6 loss in which they took 16 penalties against Texas A&M over the weekend, the Nebraska Cornhuskers are in disarray. So much disarray that quarterback Taylor Martinez was rumored to have “quit the team” after the game. After an ankle injury knocked him out of the game, Martinez was seen on the sidelines getting berated by coach Bo Pelini, who poked him in the chest.

Pelini has since insisted that Martinez is “still on the team.”
