Could Derek Jeter play for a new team in 2011? That’s the first question we ask in today’s news.

MLB news: Yankees, Jeter at a contract impasse? Javier Vazquez, Carl Pavano rumors

Jeter at a contract impasse?

Well, this is awkward. It never seemed possible that the New York Yankees and Derek Jeter would have any kind of trouble negotiating a contract. After all, he’s their all-time hits leader and longtime face of the franchise. But Jeter is getting old. Old guys aren’t attractive long-term contract buys. Yet the Captain still wants a long-term deal.

Suddenly, whispers around Major League Baseball suggest Jeter and the Yanks are very far apart in their negotiations. Is Jeter really demanding a six-year, $100-million deal? And are the Yanks really offering just $45 over three years? I have to think both sides will get something done, but this is getting a bit touchy.

Two big-name starting pitchers are the focus of recent free-agency rumors. Carl Pavano doesn’t look like he’ll return to the Minnesota Twins. Reportedly, the Washington Nationals and Milwaukee Brewers are the early favorites to sign him.

After Javier Vazquez flopped in the Bronx again, the Yankees won’t bring him back. The Florida Marlins have reportedly emerged as his primary suitor, though the Nationals, Rockies, Cardinals and Cubs could enter the mix.

NFL news: Mike Williams charged with DUI

Promising Tampa Bay Buccaneers rookie wideout Mike Williams put a damper on his solid debut season with a DUI charge this week. He was stopped by police early Friday morning after his black Escalade was spotted weaving in and out of traffic. Hillsborough County Sherriff’s deputies in Tampa said that Williams’ eyes were glassy and he smelled like booze when he was pulled over at 2:30 a.m. However, he didn’t blow over the legal limit in a breathalyser test.

It’s too early to know if the Buccaneers or the NFL will discipline him. He submitted to a urine test and the toxicology results could take four to six weeks to determine.

NBA news: Kobe Bryant in hot water over video game ad? Ron Artest wants NFL tryout?

Sigh. I’m annoyed to even report this, but Kobe Bryant is taking flak for appearing in an ad for the first-person shooter video game Call of Duty: Black Ops. The ad – which is friggin’ awesome, by the way – features Kobe and Jimmy Kimmel firing weapons in a war zone alongside other regular civilians. The tagline claims: “There’s a soldier in all of us.” Various anti-violence lobby groups have spoken out against Kobe.

Let’s set up a Ron Artest-for Brandon-Marshall inter-sport trade, shall we? Marshall suggested a few months back that he could make the NBA. Now, the Lakers’ Ron Artest says he’d like to try out for the NFL when his NBA career ends, though he didn’t specify a position. Punter? Please?

Have a great Weekend Folks!
