NHL news: Vancouver Loses The Cup – Hooligans Start Riots

It was quite an end to the NHL season last night. Following the Boston Bruins’ Game-7 victory over the Vancouver Canucks to capture the Stanley Cup Final in Vancouver, the city erupted into riots and violence.

Fights broke out; angry Canucks fans (AND HUNDREDS OF NON-HOCKEY FANS) tipped and burned cars, set off firecrackers and looted buildings, including a bank. Police had to battle the crowds with tear gas and pepper spray.

“We have a small number of hooligans on the streets of Vancouver causing problems,” said Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson last night. “It’s absolutely disgraceful and shameful and by no means represents the city of Vancouver.”

The true fans of the Canucks agree 100% with NBA MVP Steve Nash On Twitter – “Vancouver stop burning shit. We’re a great city and have a lot of class. Our team is great our championship will come. Soon.” – Steve Nash

Several Canucks played through injuries

On the hockey side of things, it turns out, as many of us suspected, several Vancouver players were hiding injuries during the final. Ryan Kesler had a tear in his groin; Alex Edler had two broken fingers; Chris Higgins had a major foot injury.

Tim Thomas wins Conn Smythe

Did Tim Thomas just complete the greatest season ever by an NHL goalie? He already set a single-season record for save percentage in the regular season. By the end of the playoffs, he had a Stanley Cup ring, the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP, and set a league record for saves in a postseason and saves in the final. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Mark Recchi retires

Mark Recchi is going out on top. After winning Game 7 with the Bruins, the 43-year-old winger announced his retirement. Recchi hoisted the Cup for the third time in his 23-year-career. He leaves the game with 577 goals and is 12th in league history with 1,533 points.
