Wade Phillips Signs with Cowboys Through 2011

It’s been confirmed that the Dallas Cowboys have signed Wade Phillips to a three-year contract extension.

There was serious debate over the last half of the season as to whether Phillips would be kept on with the Cowboys, especially under notoriously fickle owner/GM Jerry Jones.

But after the Cowboys broke their habit of losing in December and quickly being bounced from the playoffs this year, the franchise has decided to stick with Phillips and attempt to find some continuity with the coaching staff.

The Cowboys win over previously undefeated New Orleans on December 19th seemed to solidify Phillips’ job status.

Despite the fact that the Cowboys have the second best record in the NFL in the last three seasons, all under Phillips, there was serious concern with the fact that, until this season’s victory over the Eagles, Phillips had never won in the playoffs as a head coach. With a record of 0-4, it was a great concern to the very proud organization that hadn’t won a playoff game in over a decade.

But leading America’s Team to the best defense in the NFC, and that big victory over divisional rival Philadelphia, was enough to secure Phillips a contract that would, assuming he finishes, tie him for longest head-coaching tenure under Jones’ regime. Something very impressive, considering how quickly Jones’ has been to chop heads in the past – just ask Chan Gailey.
