NFL news: owners still want right of first refusal
First off Happy Canada Day to our Canadian readers…
As the NFL lockout negotiations continue, it’s clear that the NFL owners want to retain their right of first refusal on the contracts of players entering their fifth and sixth seasons.
They would want the union to allow each NFL team to use that right up to three times this offseason.
Doing so means the owners could make a fifth or sixth-year player a restricted free agent. That way, they would at least have the chance to match any offer he received from another team.
The labor negotiations in Minneapolis between representatives of NFL owners and players moved away from accord and turned into finger-pointing Friday. Oh-Oh.
Today is the last day of a 4-day bargaining session. It is believed an agreement has to be reached by mid-July in order for the NFL not to cancel any preseason games.
The first exhibition game is Aug. 7.
Talib to go on trial in March 2012
Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Aqib Talib’s felony assault trial is set for March of 2012. He was indicted in May on a charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly pistol-whipping and shooting at his sister’s boyfriend.
In theory, the trial date ups his chances of playing the whole 2011 season, but will he have a team? [soliloquy id=”82219″]
The Buccaneers may release him for his poor conduct, which also includes regular fights with opposing players and teammates.
