NFL Headlines: Kurt Warner Retires

NFL news this week saw Cardinals QB Kurt Warner retire. He ended one of the great storybook careers in NFL history. The 38-year-old announced his retirement Friday after a dozen years. He led the St. Louis Rams to two Super Bowls, winning the first, and then led the Cardinals to another in 2009…

Arizona Cardinal’s Quarterback Kurt Warner officially called it a career Friday afternoon.

Warner was still at the top of his game, leading the Cardinals to the Super Bowl last year, and another playoff run this year. But the 38-year old decided that he would rather walk away from the game while he knew that he was still playing at a high level, rather than come back for one more year and risk stumbling and being forced out of the game.

Warner rose to prominence while leading the lowly St. Louis Rams to an unlikely Super Bowl in 1999. He picked up the Super Bowl MVP and the league MVP that same year.

Warner started that year as the backup to Trent Dilfer, and he didn’t even get that job until he was 28. Up until that point he had, famously, been a grocer. But instead of giving up on his dreams, Warner waited for the opportunity to capitalize on his dreams, and then never looked back.

It’s a very inspiring story, especially if Warner is inducted into the Hall of Fame.

While it is the stuff movies are made of, the situation in Arizona is not currently looking so picturesque. Unless the Cards go out and get someone like Donovan McNabb, Matt Leinart is the likely QB successor in sunny Phoenix. And that fact is making many uncomfortable.

But it’s got to be Leinart’s time. At least to be given a solid opportunity. He may not lead the Cards to another Super Bowl appearance this year, but maybe sitting on the bench for 3 years, watching the mastery of Warner has rubbed off on Leinart. He should at least be given the chance to find out.

When you take a look back at his entire career you begin to get a good picture on just how good this guy was. His stats should speak for themselves when he is eligible for the Hall of Fame as he should be a first ballot pick.
