NFL news: Assault victim trying to extort Cedric Benson?

The man who Cedric Benson allegedly assaulted last week is trying to take matters into his own hands.

Reportedly, Clavens “Miami” Charles’ attorney contacted Benson’s camp to demand a “settlement” meeting.

He stated that, if Benson and his lawyers didn’t respond within a certain time period, Mr. Charles would respond media requests and grant TMZ an interview.

“There is nothing to settle with Charles,” said Benson’s attorneys, Wm. David Cromwell Sr. and Sam Bassett, in a statement released to the Cincinnati Enquirer. “In fact, we intend to confront Charles in defending the misdemeanor charges against Cedric. Cedric did not act without provocation.

Cedric regrets the events of this weekend and he is committed to addressing any concerns that NFL teams may have.”

But, he will do so unburdened by the threat of extortion.

The police report states that Benson attacked Charles on a downtown street corner in Austin, Texas while Charles was talking on a phone.

Ex-NFLers sue league over concussions

Even if retired NFLers no longer intend to stand in the way of a new CBA being ratified, they’ve picked a new fight.

A group of 75 former NFLers is suing the league, claiming it concealed information about the dangers of concussions. The suit alleges that the NFL knew about the effects of concussions and post-concussion syndrome as far back as the 1920s and that the league hid the details from players, coaches and front-office staff.

Helmet-making company Riddell is also named in the suit.

The group says the league only began warning players about concussions in 2010 and made no effort to consult with former players about the risks they faced during their careers and possible long-term effects that may afflict them. [soliloquy id=”82219″]

Time for the torch to be passed to the younger players” he said on his Facebook page. “The mind is always willing to play but my body deserves the rest.”
