MLB news: J.P. Arencibia exits after beaning
Toronto Blue Jays rookie backstop J.P. Arencibia left last night’s game against the Boston Red Sox when he took a Jonathan Papelbon pitch off his left wrist.
Jays manager John Farrell said after the game that he didn’t believe the injury was serious. 
Arencibia, the 21st overall pick in the 2007 draft, had performed as advertised so far this season, struggling to make contact (.215) but providing the kind of prolific power the Jays had never seen from a rookie catcher before (12 homers, 36 RBI).
Jeter gets 2,997th hit
Derek Jeter is inching closer to that elusive 3,000th hit. The New York Yankees shortstop returned to the lineup Tuesday night after a DL stint and had two hits. Last night, he doubled off Cleveland’s Justin Masterson to pull within three hits of the huge milestone.
Jon Lester to DL
Turns out Jon Lester’s back injury is bad enough to land him on the DL. The Red Sox placed their ace on the 15-day DL yesterday with a strained lat muscle. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
He was enjoying his usual dominant season, going 10-4 with a 3.31 ERA.
