MLB news: Modell’s comes to Christian Lopez’s aid
Choosing to give Derek Jeter his 3,000th-hit ball is certainly starting to pay off for New York Yankees fan Christian Lopez.
The Yankees had already responded by giving the 23-year-old mobile phone salesman four suite seats to their remaining home games this season (including the playoffs). 
Now, Modell’s Sporting Goods is stepping up.
“We thought it was critically important that someone think about Christian.”
“When you hear about what Christian did, it wasn’t about Christian, it was really about his love for the Yankees, his love for Derek Jeter,” said company president Mitchell Modell.
Modell’s will donate five per cent of its Yankees merchandise sales through Tuesday to Lopez, who owes more than $150,000 in college loans. Modell also gave Lopez his Yankees-used 2009 World Series ring, valued at $40,000, and a 20 per cent lifetime discount at the store.
The good news doesn’t end there for Lopez. Miller High Life offer to cover his tax bill; Topps will give him his own baseball card.
“I don’t even know if there’s a cloud name for what I’m on right now,” Lopez told the New York Daily News.
Brett Anderson has Tommy John surgery
Brett Anderson has undergone Tommy John surgery. The Oakland Athletics ace had been on the DL since early June with elbow soreness.
Doctors tried injecting him with platelet-rich plasma to heal him and avoid surgery but it didn’t work. [dfads params=’groups=10&limit=1&return_javascript=0′]
He won’t pitch in the majors again until late 2012 at the earliest.
